Purging books.

It has been a busy two weeks over Easter, one to get ready, one to clean up. We had company so the washer ran for a day doing sheets and towels etc. Remaking beds, ugh!! I once timed myself remaking a bed and it was less than four or five minutes, so why is it so hard to make myself do it!!

So now it is time to get back to the machine.

I used to have a large shelf full of quilting books but over time have whittled it down to a favourite few. Yesterday, trying to decide on my next project, I looked at the shelf and realized I hadn’t taken the books off for a while, many had sticky notes peeking out the top, marking patterns I thought I would do. Time for another clearout!

I pulled four as a start, sat down and looked at those ’maybe’ quilts. And realized they did not appeal to me anymore.

So my plan is to go through all those books and if I haven’t made a quilt from them or really want to do one in the short term, they get donated.

I keep telling my DH that we won’t be in this house forever, so stop putting broken stuff down the basement! So I hope to ‘lead by example’.

Wish me luck!

Theresa, I had to chuckle when I read about your telling your husband that he couldn't put broken stuff down the basement. When we moved my mom and dad from their home, we found five or six old broken vacuums and coffee makers down the basement. It seems that Dad couldn't bear to throw them away either. Now my husband and I are anticipating the day we will have to move from our house. We have so much stuff. I am purging my stuff little by little, but not fast enough. Now it's my husband who can't bear to throw anything away. He says he's just going to have an estate sale company clean out our house. Men!!

Broken stuff in the basement? Hah! My husband recently put two broken TVs in the middle of the family room making the room unsuitable for most everything. Good luck to you on purging books. I forced myself a while back to not flag quilt patterns or recipes for 'some day' because when the time came--I had new interests. I saved a few quilt patterns knowing I will never construct them but just to look at every so often.

Well, here, the broken tv did at least get taken to the basement.’ “it isn’t working ’at this time’” And suddenly by some great miracle, it will work tomorrow, or next week or…

Two tvs are going in my car to the dump!!

Every time my hubby visits his dad he brings home another box of stuff. Fortunately he usually puts them in his workshop so I don’t see them much. Dad and his wife just moved from independent living (2 bedroom apartment) to assisted living (one room), so there shouldn’t be any more boxes coming home.

Isn’t it interesting how our tastes change over time? I’m bad about buying kits at quilt shows or shops then waiting several years before making them. A few times I wondered what I was thinking, and a couple of times the pattern had been modified and I wished I had a picture from the shop so I could remember how it looked.

I just remembered another treasure ’saved’. The kettle died. i replaced it but where is the dead one? I searched the whole basement and finally found it….in the top drawer of the filing cabinet. So it got ’unfiled’ and he has never missed it. granted we are depression babies but there has to be a point at which you say DUMP. There are more but this one just popped into my head.

This project got put on hold for a bit. Lucky me, I developed Walking Pneumonia. Only for me, there is no walking, I am totally exhausted from the coughing, and achy body. I do get up each morning, get dressed, go down for my coffee and cereal and then stagger back to bed for the rest of the day.

This had been a very bad year for me healthwise. I hope it has worked itself out of its system, and we are good for the rest of the year.

    Stay safe and healthy everyone!

    Oh Theresa,

I am so sorry!!! Get lots of rest and I hope this is the end of bad health for the year, too.

I’m so sorry you’re feeling so crappy, Theresa. Constant coughing is terribly depleting. Please take care of yourself.

Instead of purging my books, I just paid way too much for a like-new copy of The Big Book of Scrappy Quilts. I’m thinking that making scrappy quilts is the only way to get rid of the fabric I have. I have mostly fat quarters, left-overs of backing and true scraps. Of course, I just agreed to make my stepdaughter a quilt to match her bedroom decor, so that means all new fabric, I imagine. Arghh.

Oh, Theresa, I hope you get to feeling better very soon. Fighting shortness of breath causes fatigue, too. Rest well.

Sending healing thoughts to Theresa. As someone who served hospital time for anemia I commiserate with feeling tired nd having trouble breathing.

On the few days when I had some energy, I did go through the books, setting aside what I thought I would keep and bundling those for donation.

Then yesterday I looked at the ones in the keep pile and moved them all to the donation file. Trying to be realistic and also every quilt out there can be found on Pinterest or Google.

I did keep the binder with ’maybes’ but that will get weeded as we go along.

I am still at very low energy level but do see some improvement.

Thank you for all your good wishes. I know that helped.

    Update:

two tv’s to the recycle/junk shop, and a carload of ’things’ including all the quilting books to the St. Vincent de Paul shop.

So far DH has not noticed the missing tv’s.

Feeling much better these days but still haven’t touched my sewing machine. Mojo has disappeared but I am searching everywhere. Maybe he is in that file cabinet with the dead kettle.😆😆😆😆😆

You’re making progress! I have two tops ready to be quilted but haven’t felt like quilting yet. I did get the house cleaned, so I haven’t been a total lazy lima bean.

Theresa, I'm so happy you are feeling a bit better! Just take it day to day. The problem I have since I started sewing again is that I keep starting new projects instead of finishing the 6-8 I already have going 🙄😂. I will get them all done eventually, I guess!
