Bi-fold door on closet suggestions

last month

My bedroom has a short entry hall with a clothing closet. The width of the hall is about 42 inches, and the door opening is about 70 inches. I think when the closet was built, the contractor installed a very cheap set of doors. It was built about 5 years ago, and has never functioned properly. There isn't room for a pocket door or a barn door, so I've tried to brainstorm alternatives. I'm wondering about a pivot hinge (with bi-fold or narrow doors). I don't know anything about them. I did look at the hardware for a "full access" bi-fold door, and I don't think there is room for that, either. Who would I consult locally to help with this issue? Do I need an architect?

After over 45 years of designing homes and other building types I have come to the point of realizing the wisdom of curtains. They are not for every application, but offer full exposure if the hanging and nearly silent operation. It sounds like this would be a good solution for your situation.

    Hire a seamstress.

Agree with @Mark Bischack: "the wisdom of curtains." Get some great fabric that coordinates with your carpeting and have someone sew them to size. You may even be able to get some online. This setup is called "Ronna" from Wayfair:

Wayfair, Amazon, and World Market also have some Asian inspired geometric beaded curtains in browns, tans, and black.

It pays to have an architect. :) Both suggestions are great - and I never would have thought of curtains! Could be very elegant... tres chic.

Europeans have been using curtains as closet doorways forever. There's probably a Pinterest board on them like this example. This is a hallway, so not as visible as head-on.

Thanks Housegal. I may need to move to Europe.:)

I prefer the look of your existing bifold doors over curtains. Have you looked into replacing the hardware mechanism or having them adjusted? This would be a handyman type of repair.

We switched our front hall closet bifold doors ( can’t stand them) to a set of french doors- no regrets.

I would remove the doors and spend the $$$ on a really nice closet system and have NO doors

Thanks everyone for the great suggestions. I'm still thinking about my options.

We had giant, heavy mirrored doors that we removed, had closet professionally redone and it looked so nice we didn’t put on.
Looked so nice we chose not to put doors back in, so don’t rule that out. It not like visitors are traipsing through your room.

If the opening is 70”, and the hall 42”, there is room for double doors on the closet, each door about 34”. Yes, you have to close the doors to get by, but wouldn’t you close the doors anyway?

I think the beads stand on their own. Do not underestimate the power of beads... :)

or curtains... or beads and curtains...

    AI is on board. ;)

I think sliding doors that slide past each other is your best option. This will mean only half the closet will be visible at a time, but that's the price of having a narrow hallway as the access.

I grew up with sliding-closet doors in my bedroom. They're okay.

I have come to the point of realizing the wisdom of curtains.

I like curtains. They can bring in texture and color, but definitely get nice ones /take them to the ceiling. They might need to be custom. Consider a sliding system on the ceiling /a curtain rod to hold in your hand so you don't have to touch /dirty the cloth.

Check your measurements - can you slide an IKEA PAX unit in the space and outfit with standard sliding doors? or several towers with 15" - 18" opening hinged doors?
