First House- Need Help

Hey everyone,

After 10 years of renting at different places I’ll finally have a place that’s actually mine. I really want to make it MY OWN! I’m getting all new furniture and I’m stuck on what would work well furniture color wise. I have light beige counter top stools and thinking about light gray couch and a neutral rug. What color coffee table, tv stand, etc would you all recommend?

Thank you!

Neutral furniture is smart because furniture is expensive, but definitely pick a fun colorful rug and decorate around that. The accessories, wall decor, and throw pillows can always be changed out for a whole new style while the neutral furniture stays. You can then choose your wall colors from kitchen canisters, your rug, throw pillows, or a favorite wall picture.

    Congrats on home ownership!!!

I would do tans/browns then. Grey is finally moving out and warmer colors moving in, so a warm neutral is best. I would never do a white or cream couch, even if I was the only one living there. Patterned chairs can be fun if they aren't crazy expensive or if you'll love them a really long time.

I used this inspo photo to create a room for you in AI.

I used a gray, gold and blue palette.

Oops here is a TV console

I still love gray, and it makes no difference to me if it is in or out of favor. You have a lot of warm tones in the floor a countertops. Love this entire apartment. Simple, welcoming, a mixture of MCM, with antique pieces...if you have space for a large cupboard, it would be great storage.

Thanks for the like. We don't have measurements but the TV would go on the far wall to be seen from the kitchen and not opposite the window glare.

Something like this with sofa and two side chairs or loveseat, plus a swivel chair to face the TV, sofa, or kitchen or squeeze behind it.

The gray is a large area carpet.

Notice how in both proposed rooms, everything is on legs or is light and airy/floaty to show more floor which expands the space. Only the sofa reaches the floor or almost to ground the room. No bulky arms on the other chairs.

An antique adds gravitas and a touch of black adds elegance.

With beige barstools and gray furniture, you are mixing warm and cool tones. Adding some green or blue ties them together as shown with blue ottoman or the green throw pillow/plants, blue rug, etc.

For a sofa perpendicular to a TV, get something with low soft or rounded arms that can act as a headrest because most likely you will sprawl on it to watch TV. Detached soft back cushions can get messy so sturdier cushions and/or velcro is the answer.

These rooms successfully mix old/new and warm/cool tones.

Were you hoping for someone to shop exact pieces for you? You would need to provide dimensions. We have no idea the length of the window wall from a photo.

We have the Pottery Barn Wells swivel chair and love it. It also comes in Petit which seems better for this room.
