landscape design - calm and flowery

last month

Hi - took our landscape designers list of flowers and inputted into chat GPT and it turned out like this. While I like it, it doesn’t seem as calm as I’d like our backyard to be. I added some trees to both sides to make it more symmetrical (see second pic) but not in love still. Any suggestions or way to guide our designer to get closer to what we like? I want it to feel very calm, clean but also full and flowery. I do not want it to look overly manicured. Climate: Long Island, NY. Need low maintenance so perennials. Will have constant gardener for grooming. Thanks!

Do you have a picture of your actual backyard/pool area?

Why would you ask AI to design your garden, Sigrid asks. I don’t know, maybe for the same reason you would ask a bunch of strangers on the internet to help you design your garden? They are both a way to get started. What’s wrong with that?

AI does not understand how to put together a good design. Better would be to find some photos that resonate with you of well-designed areas done by qualified people. You can use that format to help place the plants with similar habits that are on your list, or to use as examples of what you have in mind for the end result to get helpful suggestions from forum input.

" maybe for the same reason you would ask a bunch of strangers on the internet to help you design your garden? "

Sorry but the two are not the slightest bit comparable. With the input from forum participants, there is a very good chance you will get advice from a live human being with landscape design experience. There is an underlying understanding of design aesthetics that AI lacks, as well as detailed plant knowledge for that specific area.

There may be some limited value to AI but assistance with landscape design is not one of those situations!!

I like the first rendering, but if you want calm and clean, have plants in even rows all the way across from smaller to taller...like the section with the 3 tall cyprus. The low flowering plants in front, then the a row of the medium rounded greenery. The tall cypress in the rear. Formal but lush and lots of nice mixed flowers and colors in front that give the casual feel.

Thank you for the help. The first image is AI. The second two images are my actual yard and I copy/pasted what I liked on top of the image. While I understand scale may be slightly off, I was trying to get a visual to help us make up our minds and better guide our landscape designer.

Here are new designs. I think I liked the floral arrangement in the one, and the white crape Myrtles and arborvitae’s of the other. Would love additional opinions.

Be sure to allow sufficient space for the mature size of your landscape materials.

A mature cape myrtle can be 6-8’ wide so plant it at least 4-5’ in from your fence/property line.

Arborvitaes can grow large too so they may need to be moved further away from the fence.

Also keep landscaping far enough away from the water’s edge so you avoid a lot of debris dropping into the pool.

I like the flowering trees and would plant a row of them along the fence as a nice privacy screen and still see some of the white fence between the trunks as a nice backdrop for the flowers in front.

I don't see how anyone can give suggestions without knowing the dimensions of the site. If a designer gave you a materials list, why aren't you revising the design with that person? I guess it's your choice to crowd source the design . Are crapes fully hardy on LI or die back shrubs? Good luck to you.

You still have a design that looks like it is completely out of proportion. Rather than photoshopping things, you should use graph paper and figure out what heights and widths things will be.

    Some idea

You can go with less lush landscape as well.
