Help with choosing cabinets in an open space

I'm looking for some help with kitchen color combinations. We're considering a two-tone kitchen or possibly sticking to one color. My husband prefers a flat gloss white, but I'm worried that it might look odd since our living room has white shaker cabinets and the kitchen opens up to that space. What do you think? I've included a pic of my living room.

I would pick the light/med maple shaker style . I think it warms up the vibe compared to all the stark white. the grain-like wood look in the slab style doesnt work as well w the floor. the more even maple shaker style leaves a lot of options for counter and backsplash and you'll find a lot of great choices .....those are the eye level in the space. when you narrow things down are you going to show the plan , or is this replacing w the same configuration? .

The flat panel feels too modern and I agree it doesn’t go with the flooring. I love the maple shaker cabinet. And think it’ll work better with the living room cabinets too.

    I wouldn’t do two tone.

I am leaning towards a two-tone design because the white cabinets in my living room and I have a white dining room table. Having all white cabinets feels like it would be too overwhelming. Or how about all wood cabinets and a pure white counter top?

Another option I’m considering is to have the upper cabinets in white and the lower ones painted blue. But that's much more money. This decision is quite stressful for me.

two tone kitchen really depends on a couple things .....it has to be a natural fit w the overall size and layout ......it can sometimes work / not always. if you want people to validate two finishes then show what the kitchen is all about.....so far you only show the living room.....arent we discussing kitchen ?

The layout of my renovated kitchen. Would two tone work?

I'm confused about where the living room sits in relation to the kitchen. Can you just post a simple sketch of how the two relate?

    1. The living room cabinets look like extra kitchen uppers left over from another project. I would not plan your entire kitchen around them. I hope that perhaps someday you would remove them and put a furniture piece for storage there instead.

    2. I don't think your kitchen layout lends itself well to two-tone.

    3. I have no problem with the slab doors. They are modern, but the rest of your home is somewhat modern too. They are fresh and look nice with your floors.

    4. I don't like your particular maple shaker with your floors.

    5. Your thought of wood cabinets and white counter is a nice one.

    6. Do you really intend to have two counters with stools facing two different directions? It feels a bit like a diner.

under the pass through cut out might be a nice cabinet/ counter area for storage and landing if you cant get electrical there for an actual coffee pot...it can be useful anyway....the seating there? not so much..... at the end of your peninsula might be better for an extra stool w overhang so the seated people are all around the peninsula. just reduce the length of peninsula so you can have an end stool. w 9 or 12 inch overhang. why the empty walls around the hood ? .....I'd reduce the triple cabinets flanking the window and put a 15 or 18 in cabinet either side of the hood...balance out the wall configuration . the counter garage down from cabinet is something to omit. a few tweaks on your set up before choosing paint colors/ finishes ...I think.

Thank you for your responses; they provided a lot of helpful information.

The only reason I asked about the pass-through was for additional storage. Maybe I'll eliminate it.

I personally dislike upper cabinets, and since the wall with the hood vent is visible from my living area, I think it would look cleaner if the upper cabinets were removed. I’m including pictures taken from my kitchen looking out. I'll be removing all the doors leading into the dinning room

So far, I haven’t loved any of the wood samples I’ve seen.

I would prefer not to have an entirely white kitchen. So I'm considering incorporating white by using white countertops with wood cabinets.

Herbflavor, thanks for the suggestions on my layout! Any other thoughts?

i think if you outline the rooms on graph paper.....from above looking down at all the walls/ doors/ areas that have defined names and unnamed spaces also ...... and where the kitchen cabinets and counters and seating will be in your proposed plan........along with general furniture placement areas it might help . for example between the back of the bar stools and over to couch backside there seems to be nothing. so the question arises if you eliminated the peninsula maybe this would be an area for an island.......the dimensions and the space available should be utilized the best possible way. as your post listing states "open space" .....you want to work it for a great end result. as things appear right now...not certain.

I like this kitchen, but not sure if the light wood would work in my space.

I know the coffee table and the bar area need to be replaced. I’m working on that as well:)
