IME, and the experience of many others, reticulatas are not long lived bulbs no matter what you do.

If you give Iris reticulata fertile well drained soil, lots of sun and warm dry summers they return and multiply. Mine have been returning over ten years and single bulbs have become clumps of plants. I know that isn't the case for the majority of gardeners.

Iris reticulata has a few thin leaves that grow to be about a foot or more tall, the leaves are still green and growing now, they will have turned yellow and will be dormant by mid to late June. Because of them growing so tall later in the spring I doubt they would get a chance to make enough food growing in a lawn that is cut with a lawnmower. I have been very successful growing them right at the edge of the grass, where the grass meets a flower bed.

This little guy is called 'Pixie' and it blooms with the first crocus.

I believe that once the leaves yellow it’s safe to cut them.

The foliage will die down soon, like with all early spring bulbs, so maybe try to hold off for another week or so. For me the fancy ones are very short lived, but I have a few purple ones that have been in the same spot at least 20 years, and some blue ones that I planted in the fall of 2016. They never really increase for me, and some years there seem to be more blooms than other years, but some do persist.

They were very long lived for me at my old property with very sandy soil. I haven't been here long enough in the heavy clay to know. But I do know the foliage gets very tall and lasts a long time, so I don't think a lawn is a good place for them.

@laceyvail 6A, WV, I have heavy clay. As I mentioned above, some do persist for me, but they do not really multiply.

Still hoping they'll multiply. I like them even more than crocus.
