Certainly New England. Pennsylvania or Massachusetts would be my guess. Great original paint. You will need to go to a sothebys type place with an appraiser with a specialty in early American. Or find a Keno twin.

lol, thanks. Ironically, my brother used to work at Sotheby's. He's in the art world but he didn't seem to be able to learn more, either. I'm not totally sure how hard he tried, though.

A google image search turned up some similar but not identical chairs on places like chairish.com, etsy, and a few auction sites. They are often labelled "birdcage chairs" or "birdcage windsor dining chairs". Many show faux bamboo styling, including reproductions. I didn't find any info on the "S. Higgins" mark, so you could seek out an expert if your brother has contacts in the antiques world.

This is mine. Family lore is that it came out of independence hall but I don’t put much stock in old family stories!

Birdcage, yes, Higgins is a common name on Cape Cod, I'll see what I can find.

Unfortunately the market for early American is soft. You are on the right track trying to search the name, as you know it will be worth more in the area it is made (Ie if its a Salem woodworker I would consign it to a north shore auction house. )
