Blank space on house exterior

last month

We‘re going to be removing the stucco and putting new siding on our house (also putting on new roof and front doors with stone on area around the doors). I’m not sure what to do with the lower right side. Any suggestions?

    What's behind the wall?

    What stone are you considering?

  • last month

The garage is behind the stucco wall. We haven’t picked the stone yet. Probably going with hardie cobblestone siding so something that blends well with that

That's a big change in color. Do you have a good idea how the house will look?

You can always buy primed Hardie and have it painted a color of your choice.

For the blank wall, landscaping is the common answer, but I'd consider adding a row of windows along with some taller plants.

Stone is really trendy, so choose carefully. No stacked stone, for example.

I'd prefer a darker color similar to what's on the house now as I think it suits the architecture.

depending on the existing garage arrangement, you could add a modern style garage door

for an open concept outdoor living space.

I think the darker color is better for your style of house. For the big blank wall, I like Lyn Nielsen's idea of a garage door there, similar in style to the one she shows in her pictures. If that doesnt work for you, consider some windows like the rest of the house, and put them there. Its nice to have some windows in a garage.

Taller shrubs. If you have greenery covering that space, it would look great.

Thanks everyone for your ideas. The garage entry is on the side so we're going to keep it there. I do like the idea of adding windows. I have to see if it's within the budget. Tall shrubs are a good option too. If anyone has any other ideas, I'm open to hearing them all.

It looks like it was made for a small sculptural tree like a mid-sized Japanese maple.

Why not carry the stone over there, too?

I've thought about adding the stone to the right side of the house but not sure how to balance it with the left side of the house. Would putting stone higher on the right side and lower on the left side (to the base of the windows) look off? Just add stone to the right side and not to left side at all? Put the stone knee high on both right and left sides? Any thoughts?

    Any thoughts?

I'll suggest no stone anywhere. Instead use a different type of siding. Shakes or board and batten around the door.

Especially no random application of stone like to the right side only.

Consider the colors too -- roof included. What you select will make a big difference in how the house looks.

I'd probably keep the house dark and choose a brighter color for the new doors.

I like the suggestion of a Japanese maple, depending on your location. So pretty!

    @Valerie

What are your thoughts about the stone simply around the entrance as on the above visual? I find that suits the style of your house.

I like the idea of stone only around the front door. I’m just still struggling with how to deal with the right side so that’s why we’re considering stone there. I like the idea of adding windows but will have to see about cost.

IMO no stone slapped on that house ever.If new siding is the plan why not just add the siding to the blank wall that is all that you need to do to that house no shake siding either this is a very modern house so keep that in mind . I would aslo do some much more modern type landscaping.

Thank you for your input. What do you recommend for more modern landscaping?

  • last month

Hey Valerie…a thought…why not put an ornamental tree there like a Japanese Maple. I don’t know what the climate is like in your area. You might have room for more than one tree.

My first thought was adding windows as shown by PPF and install the same siding and color as the rest of the house. Otherwise, if budget doesn’t allow the windows, some taller landscaping would help tremendously using the blank wall as a backdrop. But, I would suggest evergreen plants to maintain the effect year-round. BTW, I really like your house.

This is one exapmle of modern landscaping really quite structured and just an idea to play with but if you google modern landscaping there are tons of examples to use for inspiration

Helps to know general location for materials and landscaping. For example, stucco is common here in the high desert of New Mexico.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Would you keep the 4 panel windows as they are or try to make them into fewer panes?

As for location - I live in a suburban area outside of Philadelphia.

I would keep the 4-panel windows, it's a nice detail on your house.

You didn’t say what color the siding will be.
A mid tone color would be nice w the lighter right side wall.
Totally agree that you need a specimen tree Go to a nursery and see what you like. A taller Japanese Maple variety would be a great choice.

We're not sure what siding to use to give this box window a Mid-century style look. We live in the Great Lakes so the siding needs to be able to withstand harsh winters and rain.

I'm in agreement with whomever came up with the idea of additional windows unless that's a concrete wall with stucco coating. That situation would make windows impossible as cutting out concrete from an existing wall is difficult to say the least.

  • last month

I would put tall plants where that stucco currently is regardless of what siding you do, since those windows are so high.

It looks like you're in the process of making some significant updates to your house. For the lower right side, you could consider:

Adding Landscaping: Planting some shrubs, flowers, or a small tree could help balance the look and add curb appeal.

Pathway or Small Patio: You could extend the stone pathway or add a small patio area to complement the new siding and doors.property management company Accent Features: Adding a decorative accent like a garden bench or sculpture could bring some character to that space.
