last month

I need help with what art to hang in my powder room. I think I want gold frames because the fixtures are gold. Thanks!

I’d go with mimimal frames and prints with the same colors in wallpaper and the wall color. Less can be more.

    ^Nice from Maureen.

The landscapes get a bit lost. Maybe with a much bigger frame.

I think the naturalist illustrations (flower or bird) work better with the negative space in the artwork and the more vintage feel.

Thanks so much. I’m starting to lean towards these because I like the lightness the matting would add to the wall. Either these or two birds with thinnish gold frames in this size.

For me, the last 2 single leaf botanicals look too much like the wallpaper design. I much prefer the 2 flowers you show in your original post that are sitting on back of toilet. But, I would want thin gold frames - like is on the mirror -on them to add a bit of punch & elegance. The size of those florals feels right with scale of wallpaper design. And, the images are large enough that they can easily be ’seen’ from outside of the room, when passing by. I’m guessing your plan is to hang the art on the long wall that can be seen when door is open. The landscape images all look too dark & too vague for images to be viewed from outside the room. The modern art & colorful art shown by stiley are too much of a clash with paper IMO. The 4 birds are too busy & the 2 herons are too big.

I would vote for the two herons or something similar. They make a statement on one wall, where the wallpaper becomes the background in a good way. There is still plenty of wallpaper to view on other walls as well.

The great thing about art is how it's so personal. It seems like you're leaning toward a nature-on-nature vibe. I like the large white matting on your foliage prints, but it may look a little like a showroom because the foliage and the color is so similar to the foliage in the wallpaper. I really like your landscape painting, and since it's in a bathroom, the art can be viewed up close, or you catch a pretty glimpse of it when you walk by. You could also reframe that piece to include a white-ish fillet and make the art stand out from the frame a bit.

This landscape? I do like how it ties in the blue vanity, seen in the corner of the pic.

I hadn’t noted the pale blue of the vanity but you’re right that it does pull out the blue in art. The frame looks nice with vanity handles. The black framed on has blue in sky but the one in front looks more elegant which is nice for a powder room.

    @Gordon's Wallpaper Installation

Do you have any tips for hanging artwork over the toilet without damaging the wallpaper?

I have the perfect portrait orientation piece for our powder room but don’t want to put a nail hole in my wallpaper.

Gordon’s Wallpaper, found this line drawing at

Love the bunnies! Makes me smile. How large is the piece overall? I know you’re not asking me but….

Gold frames sound like a great choice, especially if they’ll tie in with your fixtures! When choosing art for wallpaper, consider the scale and color of the pattern—if it’s bold or busy, simpler artwork or a cohesive color palette can help balance things out. Black and white prints, line drawings, or even minimalist abstracts look great with gold frames and patterned wallpaper. And if the wallpaper is more subtle, you can go a bit bolder with the art. Can’t wait to see what you pick!

Purple Plume, try the Command picture hanging strips, or similar brand,

    KW
Not exactly sure but right size for largest wall and to be seen from hallway

  • last month

Command hooks are not recommended for wallpaper...can ruin it. Try screw-in hooks in the ceiling close to the wall.

@blubird Thank you for the colored sketch and for sharing your method. I am thrilled to know this is possible because we have a great piece of artwork for that space and it works well with the wallpaper and the frame size is spot-on.

Any way to mount a bathroom tissue holder to wallpaper without risk?

  • last month

    Free-standing toilet tissue pole.

@tracefloyd I’m using the free-standing toilet tissue pole now but much prefer a wall-mount style for space and quality reasons. I purchased a Grohe toilet tissue holder to match the faucet and have never been brave enough to install it over the wallpaper.

The top of the tank comes in handy.

Not convenient for everyday use. Thank you for your suggestion. I want to stay on topic with the thread, which is attaching art (or in this case, tissue paper) to wallpaper without damaging the wallpaper.

Oops, supposed to be comedic relief...my bad.

Keep extra wallpaper for future patches of damaged areas. I would suggest using an Exacto knife on the two layers at the same time, the wall and the fresh paper, so the patch is the same shape when the old paper is peeled off.

Is the art not going to stay on the wall for the foreseeable future? If so, the tiny nail hole is never going to show. Hang it and enjoy it!

I imagine that once you install your toilet paper holder that it’s not going to move either.

Just take a deep breath and do it.

And then we need to see a pic!!🙂

@tracefloyd Your pic of the vintage crocheted TP hiding ladies & hats was indeed comedic relief! Some of us are so serious we miss the obvious humor….😉

  • last month

@Becky Benton - your thought about installing TP holder was exactly mine too! That fixture isn’t likely to change even if the wallpaper is removed. The holder would be taken off to get at al the wallpaper & then it’d go right back on.

This inset style with frame that could be painted to match any wallpaper or trim in the bathroom.

I have this bird pic that I could reframe in gold.

Over the toilet? Or on big wall…
I like the idea of a picture of being reflected in the mirror when you’re using the restroom.
    Pretty with the vanity.
I also have the smaller picture that I like, but is it too small for the big wall. Or I guess I could put it over the toilet and the bird on the big wall.

The bird picture has the yellowish color which complements the cream wainscotting when looking into the bath from the hall.

The gold frame brings out the yellow in the art...the yellow, white and blue and gold is very pretty.

Oops I just saw the two gold frames, I think I'm leaning vintage, the modern is too much like your fixtures.

The bird seems to small for the big wall but the right size for over the toilet. Will look nice in a frame to match your hardware.

@Becky Benton definitely over the toilet.

One interior designer I know always hangs artwork over the toilet. She says it gives gentlemen something to look at while using the facilities.

Had this reframed. I think I still need something on the large wall.

Bunnies or landscape? I think the landscape goes best with the word picture.

I like the rabbits over the toilet. The oil painting on the other wall. Tray on back of toilet to hold your things

Thanks. I’m feeling like a bird over the toilet is not big enough. Am I wrong?

    *the bird

To my eye it looks too small and busy next to the busy wallpaper

Why two walls for art? One wall should be enough for a small powder room. Keep it simple.

I would forgo anything on the toilet wall. Seems an odd choice to highlight the toilet.

Well, now that I put holes in the wall. I feel like I need something there that is going to cover them up. Darn it all.

@stiley, where can I get this tray? Thanks!!

Carefully fill holes in wallpaper and use craft paint mixed to match wallpaper and holes won’t show.

Another one who doesn’t think toilet wall needs decor. I may be prejudiced because I remember dolls with fancy crocheted skirts covering a roll of toilet paper used as tank decoration in my mom’s house- she had numerous ones to switch out with seasonal and holiday outfits.

Trying out the landscape and no art above toilet

I also tried the rabbits on the big wall. I like the moodiness of the landscape best I think.

@Becky Benton I like the egret over the toilet best of all the options you're considering.

I would leave the wall between the toilet and the sink without artwork.

I am not fond of tbe landscape piece in this Powder Room. I think it is too dark on that expanse of wallpaper. To me, it causes the room to border on gloomy when placed there.

One other consideration: If you hang the egret above the toilet, then look in the mirror above the sink, do you see a full reflection of the egret piece when you stand facing the sink?

Ditto @purpleplume’s opinion. Egret over toilet, nothing on the long wall. Feels like art there intrudes into already narrow space. Clearing the top of toilet would help elevate the eye.

Thank you guys so much for weighing in. This has been so hard. Yes, you see the reflection of the Egret in the mirror.

Maybe something like this on the wall behind the toilet could serve two purposes: to anchor the heron picture so you can hang it a bit higher and lend it more importance, and also provide place for stuff instead of on the toilet tank.

Yes, I like that. I had two pictures over the toilet before, so I think that’s what is throwing me with the heron not looking tall enough.
