We planted this Starlite Crabapple 10 years ago and it is about 15 feet tall by 16 feet wide. In the past few years its trunk bark is peeling up in large chunks mainly on the side of the tree that receives the most sun. I am in Zone 3/4 and we have harsh winters so I usually add the white plastic spirals to the trunk and remove them early in the spring. I also noticed that there are also

horizontal roots growing at the base of the trunk. The tree has been flowering profusely and leafed out as usual. I would be grateful for thoughts as to what might be the issue with my tree.
