let's see the other end of the room. near the door???

with a quick scan of the space, I would move the TV/console to the end to the right of the fireplace and direct all furniture placement toward the TV and fireplace.

Edit all the excess decor, remove everything, the mirror reflects nothing of interest.

Be very selective on what you need.

Are you up for any painting?

Yes, where does the tile lead? Please show that wall...the entire space.

It seems cozy already but the rug is way too small. It should be only 2-3 feet from the walls and the tile and would unite the space. A rug in a light color would brighten the room, and the furniture less close together would open things up.

Place the bench against the stair wall. Larger art would where the mirror is feels more impactful. The piece over the mantle feels jammed. Smaller art in one horizontal row would be a nice gallery layout on a wall or even around a corner.

Center the sofa on the Center Line between the two windows.

Select a much larger rug and turn it as you see in the diagram

Move all the furniture more towards the staircase.

Too much stuff on the walls don't you think?

A patterned rug with some golds, browns and blacks would be a nice addition.

Photos of the tiled area that leads to the garage and the wall on the right of the fireplace.

As much as I like the woven shades I think the dark color contributes to the underground feel

Yes, white linen sheer drapes would bounce a lot of light around the room.

Have the keyboard face the room so that corner feels more open.

Table lamps are much more cozy the overhead lighting. You don't want to see the lightbulb in the floor lamp so point the shade up or down or at the wall.

    The hallway looks nice.

TY for the great ideas I can implement without leaving the house! I think it looks better. Just need to work on the other side of the room :) I added the mirror to reflect the windows across the way because the patterned chair is mine and I wanted to see as much light as possible.

Without de detailed floorplan showing wll dimensions it's difficult to determine what the best furniture layout would be. However I think the room would look updated with a new warm white wall colour, linen roman shade, and a limited amount of wall decor. You seem to have lots of red accents that you can complement with a cream colour (pillows - throw) and you can get another rug with red but one that is not so powerful looking as the one you have with more white especially in the centre. For all you pictures make an arrangement and have them all in the same style of thin black frames.

If you remove 75% of the bitty stuff, it will start to feel cozy, intentional, and not cluttery the way it does now.

--Entryway: Put your big round mirror there to pull in light from entry and give the sense of a window. Add a table lamp there for more light and a bowl or basket, nothing on the floor next to console. Move the area rug in front of console.

Go for this feeling, very clean, in the entryway.

    Entire space:

--Remove the wood bench and those motorcycle decor items from that left corner. It's pointless. Eventually get a nicely proportioned armchair or recliner , floor lamp, small table, and add some books to the shelves. Instant cozy spot.

--Move the art work from the entry between the windows since the mirror will be at the entrance.

--Except for the reading corner, clear that shelf around the room and remove the floating shelves on the TV wall. It gives the feeling of clutter. If you want to have family photos down there, blow up your favorites and frame them all the same way on the TV wall.

--Get several white Ikea lockers for under the TV. However, since you have a weakness for bitty stuff, don't do this kind of gallery wall. Do the family photo gallery wall of blown up photos behind the TV as suggested.

--Get a new thuck rug in lighter colors in gold/beige and brown.

Good advice already - not sure if this has been said, but I would paint out the shelf to match the wall color and then ignore it (don’t put anything on it)

I have a second thought: Can you place TV on wall above ledge without that too-small cabinet underneath it? And clean off all the ledge items.

Honestly, the reason the room doesn't feel cozy is that you have too many little things that don't relate, plus oversized furniture, so there's a feeling of imbalance not coziness.

If you're attached to family photos in the family, then as suggested, blow up your favorites and display them on the walls uniformly framed, including those in the piano corner. Below is a family room with uniformly framed family art and photos, yet the rest of the room is very minimal.

P.S. I didn't see the windows across from the mirror in the first photos you posted. That's why we always need all four walls of a space from the beginning. So I guess the mirror works there, but it would have more impact without the "stuff" around it. You're probably used to it, but clutter works against a cozy feeling since there's nothing to focus on.

PPS The piano corner. Is the chair there for piano lessons? If not, remove it and center the piano on the wall. Remove the small table and doily. That rug doesn't work in the room. or in that corner.

I'm still bothered by all the visual clutter and small pieces. Is anyone really going to sit on that wood bench you repositioned? I can't envision anyone sitting there. If you move the sofa facing TV back a foot then leave the corner empty. Here's an article on something called "negative space." It's about how you add airiness and spaces to a room so the eye can rest.

I know you have the "shelf" around the perimeter because of the thicker lower walls, but the stained trim on that shelf, and using it for small objects really cuts the room in half, which makes it look "short" and emphasizes that it is half underground (because of the wall construction being highlighted.) I would paint that shelf the wall color and not treat it as trim, and not line things up on it. You can use the ledge for a few big things, just not like a "bookshelf".
