understanding current Miele washers

last month
last modified: last month

Back when I bought my W3038, Miele only offered one washer which made the choice easy.

Now it looks like they offer several models. I was trying to make sense of them. Looks like they differ in the following ways:

Look at the model number, e.g. WWD160

Let's start with the numeric portion

160 - basic washer

660 - adds auto dosing, interior light, and additional cycles (e.g. woolens, silk)

860 -- adds Intense Wash and even more cycles

1st letter (only one option)

W - washer

2nd letter

X - White door trim

W - Black door trim

3rd letter

D - goes with 160

F - goes with 660

I - goes with 860 and indicates rotary control (like all others)

R - goes with 860 and indicates touch control exclusive to the 860

Did I get this right? Did I miss anything critical?

If I want an interior light and don't care about Intense Wash, and I want white door trim, the right model would be WXF660. Correct?

Is there any difference in the durability of the components in these or is it mainly features?

I almost went with the 660, but chose the 860 (with regular knob) because of the SingleWash feature. The manual says it's for small loads <2.2lbs. It's something I found really useful in my personal laundry routine so didn't want to give that feature up. The 860 has the secondary recirculation pump that allows for both the SingleWash and QuickIntenseWash functions.

I thought Miele anyway senses the load--does that mean the smallest load the regular sensor deals with is 2.2lb. I run laundry daily with a small load which is probably around 2 lb. Sheets and blankets (done less often) are always >> 2 lb. Since I didn't have that feature on the W3038, I thought I would be OK skipping it. The only time I would likely benefit from it is when I'm washing a jacket.

Does the heater engage for Quick Intense Wash?

I'm not really sure how specific the auto load/weight sensing is since that happens in the background without any real information displayed to the user. It does seem to adjust both the water and TwinDos detergent as needed. I use the single wash when doing things like rags (even a small sanitize cycle at 170F is under 1hr) or a handful of shirts, etc since I do a lot of sorting with my laundry. It really helps speed up things if you don't need to run a full load cycle, the secondary pump continues to spray the laundry from above with the wash water so things come out clean. On my machine, Normal cycle is 1.5hrs and SingleWash 59min at 120F, for pretty much any weight. For sheets I run a full cycle.

QuickIntense should activate the heater, on my machine the only water options you have for that cycle are 105F or 140F and it's about 49 minutes.

I find the times adjust automatically depending on how hot the incoming water is to the machine and how long it takes the machine to bring the water up to temp.

I went and took a look at the machines today. They had the lowest end pair on pedestals and the highest end pair on the floor. Some thoughts...

They don't build 'em like they used to. Noticed the doors are plastic vs metal for my W3038. In general it looks like materials are not as good quality. Also the push button for opening the doors for both washer and dryer seems nicer than just having to tug at the door. Not a fan of the gimmicky beeping/chirping menu. I was a bit upset by the drop in quality, but what is the alternative? Are there any other brands I should look at?

I found the pedestals raise the machines enough but it's still a compromise. You have to bend to be able to look inside and the top of the machine is now raised to it's a lot harder to use it as counter space for say folding laundry. As a result, I much prefer the stack setup. That way dryer doesn't require any bending at all, and the pull out tray is at the perfect height for folding clothes.

I got a quote for a stacked setup with the 660 washer and 160 dryer but will wait till Monday to place the order. My dryer works fine but was told it won't stack with the new washer.

If you guys have any thoughts let me know.

Yes, that is the lowest cost model with a drum light. And it is White trim.
