Backyard Design Help – Patio, Fence & Play Area Ideas Wanted!

Hi! We’re working on redoing our backyard and would love some design ideas and layout suggestions.

Here’s what we’re planning:

  • A paver patio that runs directly along the width of the deck (right where the stairs come down)
  • new stairs

  • A new fence
  • A playset somewhere in the yard (open to best placement!)
  • Some mulch around the trees and possible garden beds

We’d like it to look clean, functional, and visually appealing — with a nice balance of patio space, green lawn, and play area for the kids.

Any ideas on layout, materials, or small design touches that would really make it shine? Feel free to sketch or mark up the photo if you have time — we’d be so grateful!

Thanks in advance!

Make the steps the full length of the deck, then you could remove the white railing in front. The paver pato would extend out from the bottom of the steps.

The rest of the yard would be lawn surrounded by shrubs and flowers in front of the fence. Stain the fence a dark color like charcoal or dark brown so it recedes visually.

Place any raised garden beds where there is the most sun. Play structures? The hoop next to the pavers for sure. The rest seem fine where you have them.

Hope your budget is large. Fence alone could run $10,000.

I would open up the deck so it flows into the patio. Make sure the patio is large enough for table & chairs plus grille. The larger the pavers for the patio the less weed you'll get. Playset out in right corner set into something soft (maybe rubber mulch).

Something important to consider: where is the sun most of the day? We didn't think about this and placed our childrens' swingset facing the sun and have to regularly bring over umbrellas for them. This is also important for the patio--you'll usually want some type of shade.

Assume you are hiring to complete the yard and suggest getting a few options/quotes. We had three companies over to quote, suggesting three different approaches, which really helped with our final decisions.

Can do something like this depending on your budget and the outcome you're looking to end up with.

Would advise you to hire a landscape architect or a landscaping company that has a designer on staff.

There is a a pretty big level change between the deck and ground so I would worry about tripping tripping or falling hazard if you remove all the railing which looks pretty nice. So maybe center the stairs and widen them a bit. You could add big planter boxes on either side for herbs that add fragrance, flavor for food and maybe fending off bugs. (Basil, lemongrass, lavender and mint supposedly repel flies and mosquitos but even with all of those we still fight mosquitos on our patio.)

Instead of railing, you could add benches and planter boxes built to the edges of deck. There lots of Pinterest plans for these from pallet wood or 2X4. The benches could just be boards attached to the planter boxes or make a storage bench for toys, cushions and grill equipment.

More storage for the patio could also slide under the deck where you have the lattice. If you built tall post on the edge of the deck and a couple post in whiskey barrel planters you could hang a sun sail and or lights from them. If you enlarge the bed around the trees and added lots of mulch you could nestle a small play structure in the shade of the trees. Then move basket ball hoop to opposite corner or side yard.

A fire ring would be fun in the middle of the patio with raised beds flanking the sides of the patio. If you are a DIYer you could stack all of those from paver stones or get those big galvanized cattle troughs. Those tall metal raised beds would make a good veggie garden on the fence line.

Below is a link to view our previous back yard and patio. It exposed toward the SW and before the trees grew umbrellas were necessary and we had shades on the pergola. While playground equipment was not a part of our design, space for installation was present.
