deciding on kitchen cabinet colors

last month

I am deciding on the paint colors for my kitchen cabinets. I made some samples of BM Edgecomb Gray, SW Accessible Beige, and SW Rivers Edge. I like to get the feeling of this photo when looking out from my living room. Which color would give me this kind of effect? Could some one help me out? ( The kitchen is now all covered by protective plastic; I can't see it from the living room.)

I don’t know what this means: ”I like to get the feeling of this photo when looking out from my living room.”

There is warm wood trim visible and it looks like the walls and floor are a warm off-white? My walls are a champagne color and it looks similar. Will either of those colors change? If everything is staying as-is, I’d pick a warm off-white that is a shade or two darker than the wall color for the cabinets.

What color to select will depend on which way your kitchen windows face, if you have any; what color your flooring is; what is your ceiling, is that it in the photo? What colors are in your living room, as they all need to play nicely. I wish it were easier!

The wall colors have yet to be decided. The only fixed finishes are the crema marfil floor, along with the wood beams, windows, and rail. This is an AI-generated image, not entirely accurate to the real space. I am only using it to help with my decision. Here is another AI aided photo that shows an angle from the kitchen to the living room. The windows are west facing. The fireplace, the wood ceiling and windows are fixed elements. I would appreciate any advice on choosing a color for the kitchen cabinets.

" The wall colors have yet to be decided. The only fixed finishes are the crema marfil floor, along with the wood beams, windows, and rail. "

Then show these as a picture is worth 1000 words. Context is key.

Not sure the function of that railing so I removed it.

You'll need a more substantial light fixture that hangs 30" above the table top.

SW Natural Choice is similar to your inspo image.

Whichever colors are “in the running” I strongly recommend getting a Samplize of each. Watch how the colors change each time of day before you buy a gallon of paint.

For ivories, two good ones are SW Creamy (which might be too yellow in your light) and SW Antique. I’m not a fan of gray, and I think it’s lost its glamour. If you have a lot of light coming in from the window, SW Swiss Coffee might look beautiful in your kitchen.

Personally, I would never choose a paint color like your for kitchen cabinets unless I have actually seen it in person.

Your exposure plays a big part in choosing. I have used Edgecomb Gray for an apartment rental. It looked muddy!

@eld6161 Thank you for your feed back. Is your apartment low in light? and what color wall you have?

It’s a rental property. Good light but Edgecomb on the walls did not work. Tenant doesn't care!

If you want a color similar I would research actual companies that have those colors.

But there is a reason why kitchen cabinets are limited in color range.

@lisedv Thanks! If I choose Edgecomb Gray for the cabinets, what color should I paint the walls? Is SW Pure White a good choice for the walls?

  • PRO

I suggest a white with warm undertones such as BM White Dove or Simply White. Showing below more warm whites. What ever colour you decide on for cabinets and walls make sure you look at large samples in your rooms.

@lisedv, I thought edgecomb gray doesn't pair well with white colors with yellow tone, I was wrong then.

when you have nailed the color make sure you get a sample of the painted cabinet color.

The paints used on cabinets will have a higher sheen and are a slightly different base and may not exactly match the color you selected or may appear lighter due to the higher gloss level.

FYI …. SW Edgecomb Gray turned lilac in my home, why? in any event, expensive mistake. Had to have living, dining & entry repainted.

@Jennifer Hogan @K Laurence Thanks so much for the very helpful informaiton. I was on a very tight schedule, so I already instructed the painters to use Edgecomb Gray. Now I am keeping my fingers crossed and waiting to see how my cabinets turn out.

The good news is that Edgecomb Gray is a pretty flexible neutral and works in most homes.

This is on of those instances where I might suggest something besides a neutral color for your cabinets. The kitchen in the photo is nice but borders on bland. Cabinets rendered in green or, perhaps blue, might really pop and inject some much needed life into the room.

We have edgecomb gray in every room in our house and it looks like a warm gray in good light but can show violet in low light. So long as you stay away from whites with too much yellow in them its a great color!

  • last month

@Norwood Architects, I also considered green and blue; I just didn't have the nerve to do it.

Can you AI some soft greens and blues? I think a soft color would be lovely.

Avoid grey's and black. If beige - be sure to stay withe warm browns in other parts like flooring. Go with a pastel color that you like - light pink, light yellow, light green, light blue. The photo you provided looks like from a cheap apartment - all neutral and ugly. Needs color. Avoid plastic laminate and go with real wood floors or even VCT installed in checked pattern. Avoid trendy looks as in a few years it will look dated - go with classic traditional looks.

If you want to feel satisfaction and calm I would go with what you have at this moment...it is very beautiful. My only other choice would be a soft sage green and I think you would experience the same emotion....which you can't knock! Good luck with it all!

Creamy white on the upper cabinets. Make sure it doesn't go yellow. Matte black on the bases to ground the space. Granite countertops that incorporate both colors.

wow, that's a strong statement! I guess you don't like blue skies and green grass/trees.

    @raingirl and @arcy_gw

I am curious. What was the purpose behind your unabashedly negative comments?

One of the things my mom asked all the time when I was growing up was "Was that kind?"

She wanted us to grow up to be kind people.

Maybe you should ask yourself this question prior to hitting the submit button, unless your true purpose was just being mean and ugly.

We have a similar view and coloring. I already had fairly light beige/cream travertine floors that had to stay. I went with BM White Dove for the uppers and BM Indian River for the bottoms. The walls are BM Winds Breath. I have stainless steel appliances and

Quartz counters called vanilla I think....from Arizona Tile. My hardware handles are Amerok....Esquire color is gunmetal. It's been 7 years and every morning I am still thrilled with my kitchen. When we bought the house it still had the 1979 kitchen! Good luck and go with what you love..
