Office nook or hidden pantry

We have this awkward space under our staircase. We've been using it as an office nook. It has worked quite well for our family. In our new kitchen, we can either include 2 36" pantries and an open doorway to this office nook OR close the door way with a 36" hidden walk thru pantry door. This would turn it into a walk in pantry of sorts maybe with an appliance area and countertop in lieu of the desk. We love the 'wow' factor of the hidden room but we also like the office. Interested in what people think both from a design standpoint (which looks better) and also from a practicality standpoint (which functions better).

People might be able to provide more help with an overhead layout. Also, do you have a spot for an office somewhere else? Do you use it often? Which do you need more - the office space or the pantry storage?

Finally, it seems like you could do the same set up for either: have the pantry-cabinet door like your second rendering, and it opens to either the little desk space or a pantry.

The hidden "walk thru pantry doors" that are all the rage right now are cool. And I did vote for that option ...but now I'm second guessing my vote. In reality, I think both options are fine....it really just depends on YOU and how you and your family live.

Here are a few things to think about.

    1. Are you in the office a lot?
    2. Do you need a pantry or extra kitchen item storage?
    3. Is the space small? would it gain enough storage to be worth giving up your desk?
    4. Would it be awkward to have those doors open much of the time?
    5. Are you claustrophobic?
    6. Do you work from home?
    7. Do you have another area for a desk?
    8. Do you have little kids that you need to keep an eye on while you work? Even if yes, kids do grow up fast. So don't base decision on that alone.
    9. Are you selling in the near future? A pantry would be better for resale I think.
    10. The walk thru pantry unit might fail down the road.....a regular cased door is easy to fix. What if the cabinets are discontinued and a door breaks? You're stuck. For that reason alone I change my vote.

For me, I take back the vote of walk-thru doors and just keep a regular cased door. However, if I did go with the walk-thru doors the primary reason for doing it would be for it to double as a "safe room". hahaha. If an intruder broke in, I would hide there.

If you keep a cased door there, I would do a frosted glass or obsured glass so light filters thru.

Also consider: Some of these pantry doors look weird next to other cabinets for how they align the toekick. They don't always line up perfectly...so check with your cabinet manufacturer or maker.

Love the idea of a hidden door but in the reality of daily living what are your needs?

One thought I had todat was a harmon hinge where the doors swing in and tuck away. Like this but maybe without looking exactly like a cabinet? https://www.instagram.com/reel/C9PZRvRpsYx/

So this way the door can be closed but out of the way so most of the time it's just open to the office. It can be closed for phone calls etc.

Or can be just regular bifold doors as below that swing in - copying the inspiration pic.

On a separate note, the space can easily be converted to pantry. Since, it would just be a slab desk with maybe a drawer. So, it could be used to store appliances and even use them since there would be an outlet. Just would be a few inches lower than countertop height I suppose.

The kitchen place: thanks for alll those questions and thoughts!

    1. Are you in the office a lot? - YES
    2. Do you need a pantry or extra kitchen item storage? YES
    3. Is the space small? would it gain enough storage to be worth giving up your desk? YES
    4. Would it be awkward to have those doors open much of the time? NO, currently doing this.
    5. Are you claustrophobic? NO
    6. Do you work from home? YES
    7. Do you have another area for a desk? Maybe at some future point. So then this can become pantry.
    8. Do you have little kids that you need to keep an eye on while you work? Even if yes, kids do grow up fast. So don't base decision on that alone. - not a real consideration here.
    9. Are you selling in the near future? A pantry would be better for resale I think. NO - but again can be a pantry or office really as noted above.
    10. The walk thru pantry unit might fail down the road.....a regular cased door is easy to fix. What if the cabinets are discontinued and a door breaks? You're stuck. For that reason alone I change my vote. Good point.

And yes, I have thought long and hard about the safe room idea! It's a real consideration :)

I vote for the hidden office nook.

Office nook with doors. You use the office now. It seems practical. You can use it for pantry storage down the line if you wish. Don't go with the hidden pantry fad. The fad will die and you will wonder why you are stepping into a fake pantry all of the time.

The doors give a more formal look, if that's your thing......I prefer the more open configuration for both appearance and functionality.

Mark - would you recommend with the bifold door or or no door or fake pantry into the office nook? thanks

If you work from home, aren't claustrophobic and don't have to watch kidsthe closed door seems a best function choice. The hidden door looks better in turns of finish in your renderings, imo. The harmon hinge is not hidden. The hinge is visible from the kitchen when closed or open. It doesn't appear you have wall space for a pocket door.
