I never know what "update" means. You just want to change something? Go for it, but a new door and new windows are not going to change the fact that your house is traditional. Frankly, it sounds like a lot of money for not much, but then, it's your money and your house.

Then redo the landscape. At a minimum, get things off/away from the house. Prune the tree and remove the vine.

If/when you do replace the door, choose one without the decorated glass.

The sidelights and transom should have panes in proportion with the windows.

Painting the downspouts to blend with the brick will also help.

I would paint the one you have first and decide what you do and don't like about it.

Paint the entire door and frame including trims the same color so the door looks as grand as the house. I would replace the light fixtures too. and paint just the ceiling of the overhang a Haint Blue to refresh.

There really isn't anything wrong with the door. Don't replace it until it needs to be replaced. I think the color is fine too. Definitely no black windows. This is a traditional house and there isn't anything you can do to change that. But there's nothing wrong with that. It's classic. Let everyone else chase trends. You can save your money for other things.

Your landscaping looks overgrown. From the round top window over the front door I'm guessing this house was built around the mid-90's. So some of the plantings might be 30 years old. Sometimes you have to remove old trees and bushes and start over after decades have passed. We just did that in front of our house (actually all sides). It was a relief to get rid of some trees close to the house that had gotten way too large.

I agree, the door looks just fine, and keep the windows white. Your landscaping definitely needs to be refreshed. Please remove all that ivy on the house, since that can damage the front of your house if left there.

I know you're asking about the door, but the portico is distracting and doesn't do justice to your traditional house since it partially blocks the window above it. A flat or flatter portico would be much more suitable and open up that top window. And while I'm spending your money, do think about new steps, landing, and walkway as shown in this house:

For a more open look, trim your shrubs and tree so all the windows are exposed.

So you want to improve the front of the house, but the biggest problem is the entry gable that fights with all the other gables on the house!!!!!

Change the canopy to a design that goes straight across.

Suggestions for structural modifications, like a new porch roof, do not always consider the work involved.

Brick usually complicates things. It's not like siding that is generally easy to patch or replace.

Black windows are not a trend in fact around long before white ones but it is huge cost to replace all you have just for achange I do agree that portico is not a good choice and would spend the money on thta before choosing a new door . No shutters and if a new door IMO the door the sidelights all one color they are all one part of the door in fact painting all of that with the door you have would be a great fix for now The walkway and the steps need to be as wide as the stoop too and of course the lamdscaping

Not to be unkind but the thing that bothers me the most about your home are the dormers. It would be an expense to have the (4) of them removed but I think it would greatly improve the look.

You have a lovely traditional Colonial. I agree with those that suggested changing the portico to a flat roof. BUT, if your current peaked one has prevented the sun from hitting the bricks behind it, they may be a different color.

Indulge your wish to buy a new front door by researching them. The door and sidelights can run to thousands of dollars. If your door was dysfunctional, I’d say go for it. Spend some time looking for the door and sidelights you think you would prefer. And get pricing. Then add labor.

You may find repainting your front door will suffice.

Okay. Now we know you have snow every winter. That explains the peaks. A flat roof over the entryway could be a problem.
