Need help selecting shelves

I purchased this cabinet and plan to use it as a media console (TV will set on top). I would like to add bookshelves or floating shelves on either side to display items and visually enhance the space. The placement wall is 144 inches long, and the cabinet dimensions are 21.00 x 72.00 x 42.00 inches. The wall color is Benjamin Moore Moonlight White and my other furnishings lean traditional to French Country. The room is not large and I don't want to overwhelm it. I am not sure if I should try to match the off-white, darker wood top, or neither?

I would not use this cabinet as an entertainment unit. Too tall

I'd consider an 8 ft long cabinet and a larger screen TV.

If the picture you posted isn't in your house (looks like the seller's picture), I have no idea whether what you're describing will work. Barring more information, this piece doesn't look like it will work with freestanding bookshelves or floating shelves right next to it. As Beverly says, it's probably too tall anyway to have a TV on it, so maybe you can use it elsewhere in the room and look at integrated wall units for the TV and display. Wall units are out of fashion right now as more minimalist looks are now popular, but since your style is traditional I think you could use one. If you show us a picture of the room you will get better advice.

this would be a great foyer/entry console, with framed art or a mirror above.

Mount the TV on the wall, you don't need anything under it.

Thank you for sharing your design ideas and comments. I will post more photos of the actual room after moving in and would be open to suggestions about how to best utilize the wall for a media console and complimentary shelving. Yes, I agree that the wall entertainment units are out of style (at least for now), and the scale would surely overwhelm the space.
