Master Rain Gardener Class - Traverse City

last year

I’d like to create a rain garden to capture runoff from the driveway. Water flows down thesouth edge of the drive before flowing south down the street. This is a photo of the area south of the drive as its currently landscaped.

Driveway is approximately 5000 sq ft meaning the rain garden would need to be about 1000 sq ft. There is an existing 6-8 ft wide area that is relatively level east to west but that slopes downward to the south. The area has trees adjacent to it. It is shady until midday and then gets late afternoon sun.

Completed perc test this morning. Ground was still damp due to 3.5” of rain over the weekend but filled hole once and allowed it to drain before filling again. It took 30 minutes for the water to drain. Soil is sandy loam.

More photos of the site. One looking down the driveway showing the general area where water would need to be rerouted so it does continue into the road. The other is looking north along the space that could be used as a rain garden.

Base plan showing initial sections of the proposed rain garden. Concept will continue as it moves across the western edge of our lot.

Planting plan for initial phase. Trees and shrubs are existing, as are many of the FORBS. Moving some existing plants around. Adding White Tutlehead and Blue Flag Iris.

    Great!

Love the flow test. Looks like it will work! Water will get there - to the rain garden spot.

I love that you thought of putting periodic berms to slow the water in the "ditch". Good.

Your planting plan looks good. You chose species that like it a bit drier - and that is entirely appropriate since your infiltration test was soooo quick. Awesome analytical work.

    Looks great!

You might make a list of "alternate species", in case you can't find some of your species picks. That happens on the regular. The Bottle Gentian might be difficult to find. But otherwise, looks good!

Nice work! You are good to go! Thanks for posting here - I can see the whole thing, plans, photos, etc. :) Very handy.

Slope along driveway modified so water can runoff the drive. Added pond rock and periodic rock lined channels to direct some water into existing low areas along the drive.

Added boulders and rock at the bottom of the drive to slow flow as water moves off drive into first segment of the rain garden. Interplanted with existing plants including liatris, purple coneflower, sneeze weed, bottle gentian and self heal.

First sections of the rain garden. Added white tutlehead, blue flag iris, wild geranium, blue lobelia, wild strawberry, culvers root and swamp milkweed to the plants I already had. Plan to add sections over time.
