Fabulous tree. It reminds me of some whitebark pines I observed this past week at elevations between 10,000 and 11,000 feet. They had multiple trunks like that

I wonder what might cause this bizarre growth. A stunting agent at an early life perhaps that encouraged the tree to branch out low so as not to topple, and when that stunting agent disappeared the tree grew tall and strong. That stunting agent might be a loose soil consistency that later compacted. Otherwise, the tree grows in the open, free to branch out at normal height. The tree also shows strong surface roots as if it needed to get a hold in loose soil.

The bizarre growth is also very interesting (a conversation starter LOL) I wonder what else one could try to encourage such growth, don't you want to grow the ideal tree for your grandkids :-)

It's just how they grow in open space. Nothing really that strange about it, except that usually white pines grow in groves, which encourages them to grow straight and tall.

There are a couple of old estates near me where white pines were planted along the drives instead of the more usual deciduous trees. This is what they look like.

Ontario, tho an occasional open-grown white pine might stay single-trunked for some distance upward, seems like around here most grow major branches quite low. Some at a nearby park show the typical forms. Why that is could be leader-damage at a young age. But these still look to be healthy.

OK, then, I shall win the lottery and buy an old estate with a white pine tree for my (yet to be born) grandkids :-)

Seriously, though, white pines are native here (provincial tree of Ontario) but I have never seen a tree like that (does not mean there aren't any)
