Porcupine Problem or is it?

Hi--does anyone have advise about a pesky porcupine (or multiples) that is ripping apart a black willow tree at night? I read that putting a coil of sheet metal around the trunk will prevent them from climbing. They have visited the tree in past summers but I didn't understand what was causing the breakage --attributing it to wind damage. Now, I've seen the culprit. The tree is young but established about 15 feet in width and height. Will they kill the tree if I don't do something?
