Deer were dining on the gardens and a FFO

With all the rain on and off here I wasn't able to properly spray the front gardens nor the hillside ones. This morning I saw they had dined on several of the plantings,.... sadly. We have had an abundance of deer with their fawns in the yard over the last couple of weeks. Some Doe even had twins in tow.

They managed to dine on the Rose Of Sharon bushes and the Dogwood on the hillside garden and some bites on the phlox and rudbeckia planted in the stone wall gardens. Most but not all of the other daylilies in the front garden which had a few more buds to open are gone as well.

Unfortunately they dined on Rouen Cathedral buds but not all of it as there are some short scapes still there. Pic is of the FFO. I was waiting for a multi pic but that won't happen this year.

Tahiti Sweetie after but you can see just how prolific this daylily is for the number of scapes and buds it produced.

Bright spot is the crape(crepe) mytle is just bursting with blooms.

I know as a gardener this happens not only to me but many of you as well. Hopefully we can get a dry period this coming week with a bit of cooler morning temps so I can spray again.

Your gardens are lovely despite the damage. I hope you get to spray soon. So disappointing after all the planning and hard work. I hope you can enjoy the rest of the season without the deer returning.

So sorry about the deer! It is frustrating when there's so much rain you can't spray. No deer here this year, so I was lucky to find a place without them. Tahiti Sweetie and Rouen Cathedral were so pretty before the deer made a buffet of them. Deer never bothered any of my other perennials in Nashville. They just had a taste for the daylily buds.

I feel so bad for people with deer problems. I have it bad enough with the rabbits, but deer are taller so can't be screened off with 2 feet of wire mesh. All the thought and work you have so obviously put into making a complex planting of different plants gone overnight. I will say what remains of other plants still looks so good to me, that at least you can be thankful for that. The Crape Myrtle is beautiful. Have you encountered Crape Myrtle scale yet?..........Maryl

I have certainly been there! Deer-ugh!! With all the rain there seems to be enough vegetation that flowers would be safe but it does not happen that way. It can be so frustrating. I also have problems with them moving my plant markers-I guess they may get caught in the hoof. Tahiti Sweetie was going to be beautiful!

I have pretty much decided that daylilies, and probably lilies in general, are no longer possible at the Urgent Care garden I tend. The deer seem to be increasing in numbers and appetite (at least for domestic gardens). I would recommend to you that you consider some fencing enclosure, such as the deer netting I use to enclose my yard. One does need poles (such as bamboo poles), but at least here, the netting (7 feet tall) is strong enough to deter the deer.

I spent yesterday evening cutting off any daylily scapes that the buds were completely chewed off. I also noticed 2 daylily plants had half of the plants foliage chewed down. I then sprayed everything. Fingers crossed the deer don't start dining on the other perennials.

Weather has dramatically changed today. No humidity and it is suppose to be cooler temps (80's) for the next couple of days. I'm powering up to get as much done as I can before the heat/humidity comes back again.

I am so sorry the deer got into your beautiful garden, Julia. What is letft is beautiful, and the crepe Myrtle is also beautiful.
