Useable size of sheet vinyl roll

Is the entire width of a roll of sheet vinyl useable? Do you need the width to be a certain percentage wider than your space, to allow for flaws? Asking because we want to use sheet vinyl in a bathroom that is 76" wide. The only patterns we like are on commercial flooring that comes in 78" wide rolls, and there's no great place for a seam.

    the entire roll is usable.

generally you make no flaws... Measure twice cut once.

Thanks Lyn! Hopefully it will be professionals installing.

remove all the base trim first. When you put them back on, it will cover the raw edge of the vinyl.

Good point! The new base trim we will install is a little thicker than the current trim too, which will help a tiny bit.

Are you removing an existing flooring? Do you plan to install a subfloor before the vinyl? Be careful about the undercut door trim, thresholds and doors that might be too short now.

Yes, removing the existing vinyl floor, replacing the particle board subfloor with plywood subfloor. Part of a total remodel of the bathroom.

OK, well, vinyl is very thin, so you may have to adjust your plywood thickness to make sure that floors surfaces align.

Not sure I understand this. You mean align with the adjoining hallway? The contractor we find to remodel the bathroom will hopefully choose the correct subfloor thickness, but I'll watch for reasonable alignment with adjoing hall flooring height.

The only part we are doing ourselves is material selection. Although I will certainly be channelling what I've learned on Houzz and watch how the subcontractors waterproof the shower, construct the subfloor, etc.

Sorry I do not understand the question You have 76" the roll is 78" so no seam for that width so what is the issue ?

The roll is all useable but not sure why you ask about seams

Sorry. I was trying to say I don't want a seam, so if the 78" isn't all useable I will pick a pattern that comes on a 12' roll, even though the pattern selection in 12' is much worse.

It shouldn't be an issue. What is the bathroom layout? The vinyl would not go under the vanity, toilet or tub. A good installer can make any seam invisible if there happened to be a need for one. I have vinyl in my kitchen and there is a seam about 30" where my stove is but it is set back and I couldn't even notice it.

Thanks Debbi! The floor area is L shaped. Short leg is 76.5" wide. Long leg of the L is about 8' long. Maybe I shouldn't worry about a seam. The floor that was here when we bought the house was seamed across the middle of the toilet area, and the seam was gaping. With heat-welded commercial vinyl that wouldn't be as likely to happen?

I think you will be just fine either way. The prep is important and the adhesives are so much better today. I also don't use a super wet mop - just a swiffer.

But your bathroom should be able to go in as one piece.

    Good luck!

Thanks! Mopping is not going to be what ruins seams--a child who splashes in the tub and gets out without drying herself is the major threat.
