Turn it upside down to figure out if the sliding panels and rails can be reworked and if additional legs can be added. Often people simply push together two tables rather than connect them.

The easiest and least expensive option is to get a desk table off Marketplace, from Habitat or Ikea.

You're going to ruin a really nice table

You have no way of creating the wood apron which is the element that keeps the top from warping. You can't just add legs to a top.

There are more of these tables and desks out there is hte used furniture market.

You can buy a ready made black metal base for the leaf turned into a narrow desk, something like this, other models available. You'll have an apron on the leaf at both ends.

Of course it can be done, including recreating the apron elements if you want. It's just a matter of how much time, effort and money you want to put into it. Tasked with such a job I'd completely disassemble the table, make new pieces as required from matching wood, then strip the old table parts and refinish the whole assembly.

I can't imagine that this would be faster, easier, or produce a better outcome than starting from scratch with raw lumber.

I am moving in the spring and the table will be a tight fit in our new open concept living room /dining room. I was looking to make it a multiuse piece of furniture and not be wasteful. Maybe I will post asking for suggestions on furniture arrangement.

For now, I will return the legs and stain I purchased. Project on HOLD.
