it really depends...it looks a lot nicer than some cottage kitchens....more like an older condo kitchen. it looks clean/useable and w the zippy orange [in good condition] Id try to leave well enough alone in truth. Cottage is transient use..dont overthink or overspend. I might remove the yellow table and put a small working cart there and put a real table near a window for view if you are playing cards/ socialiizng/ along w light meals/ etc. its when the counter is chipped/ appliances are super old or dont work/ floor is buckling/ cabinet doors scraped or dings / worn finish you Have to do things. None of that is present......look at the cottage in entire summ......what will you be doing/ how often/ how many people etc.

I would whitewash the brick, keep the wood as is, and add a cozy rug + cottage accents.

Some idea

Your husband loves the orange and brown, but there are more tasteful ways to work with those colors. Instead of dark brown, think neutral medium brown. Instead of orange counters, think orange paint strategically placed, and orange accessories and decor.

I know you aren’t planning to renovate the entire space or switch out cabinets., but you can strip the cabinets and stain them a lighter, neutral brown. You can re-laminate the existing counters in white Formica (or choose Corian solid surface), and install a dishwasher to the right of the sink. Then consider painting that paneled wall a light orange.

The effect you will get is of a renovated space with classic, retro charm.

Paint the lower cabinets a soft, warm cream or a light sage green. Both will blend nicely with the orange counters and give a cottage feel.

Table & Chairs: You could keep them yellow for cheerfulness, or repaint them white for a cleaner, cottagey look.

Painting the wood door a warm white or a color that ties into the backsplash/walls (like sage or muted turquoise) would brighten up the space.

Select a paint color that goes with the orange and brown. What's there is not good.

Hint, it isn't going to be a neutral.

Basically, you can either lean into the sixties vibe, or start planning the total gut job.
