Hi all, I’ve had a couple nice notes checking in on me the last couple of days, ( thanks Nicole and Annie). I see things haven’t changed with trying to post something on this site. This is my second attempt. Lol.

I am well and enjoying living in Virginia. Started some wonderful gardens from the ground up in the past two years. I love feeding the Hummers, which visit quite often during the summer. Also have to be aware of any bear that might decide to come and enjoy our garbage.

We had another grandchild born back in May. Another little boy, which makes the total now seven. As we are retired, we enjoy visiting them and also traveling overseas now. One of our most recent travels was to the beautiful tulip gardens in the keukenhof gardens in Holland. What a treat that was.

Keeping busy hiking and gardening up here on top of our mountain. I hope everyone is well and I’ll check on things next month. Margo

Margo, so great to hear from you. I have been to that garden in the Netherlands. Beautiful!

We had a plant exchange at the Cary Senior Center on Friday. I said "I'm only dropping off, no need of more" ... and then a man brought a whole lot of herbs. Oh, well, I came home with parsley, thyme, oregano. basil and two types of begonias. Busy doing some repotting yesterday. It's hard and messy when you have to do it indoors. Here's a picture from the swap. Couldn't get all of the plants in the picture - lots more than I anticipated.

We are still having such beautiful weather here. I don't remember such a pleasant August and September as long as I've been in the Carolinas. Fortunately I found out my cat won't jump off the balcony so I've been able to leave the door open some and we get a really nice breeze.

So good to hear from you Margo....I am happy you are happy and healthy!!

Tonight off to THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL to see the band CHICAGO. They are always fantastic in concert.

I am having a grub problem in my soil....they eat the seeds after I plant. Have any of you had this issue/problem?? Heck it is always something....LOL!

I love roasted cabbage. just sprinkle olive oil, salt, garlic and pepper the bake until browned. yummy

Sharon, the few times I've cooked beets I roasted them with a mixture of other root veggies.

We do eat a LOT of whole canned beets. We especially like them in our salads.

Turnips, hubby doesn't care for the turnips, but we love the greens. I'm trying to decide if I want to plant any this year. The greens are pretty cheap to buy.

I love to watch the Macy's Day Parade too, but I always miss part of it because I'm busy in the kitchen.

Nicole, It may be Friday before I can take your package to be mailed. I'll see once I weigh it and measure it if I have enough stamps to send it without taking it somewhere to get the right postage on it.

I love the plant swaps. Of course, I loved them more when I could take just about anything and try to plant it in the yard. They had white and orange booming ginger plants that must have been 6 feet tall, red bud trees and others where the size of my balcony and the size of the plant were not going to work out. The man who brought the herbs brought dozens of each one. He must have started them from seed. He just quickly dropped them off and said he had to head in to work so no one really got to chat with him.

I am running behind sending my envelope but will get it done asap.

Just opened my Annie mail. Love the spicy smelling homemade fall card. Great job. I also love the seed selection and microplane spice grater. I've never had a spice grater microplane. Can’t have too many marigolds and I love coreopsis. I hope they do well. It’s been a long time since I’ve grown them. Thank you so much.

Pie, I don't have a favorite to bake but my favorite to eat is lemon cream if it's a good one. Not a lot of restaurants offer lemon pie and it's often not that good when they do. I love most pies and most recently made Key Lime.

No garden work here. I'm interested to know how your Platte Witte Mei Turnip seeds do. Sounds like a good variety to try.

One of our favorite dishes is a loaded baked sweet potato! We rub olive oil over the potato skin and baked in the oven till tender. Topped with butter, sour cream, cheddar cheese, bacon bits and chopped green onions! It's a meal itself. I wanna eat one right now 😂

Sharon, your loaded sweet potato sounds delish!! I have never treated sweet potatoes like a baked potato.....yes, I want a loaded sweet potato now!!

Temps are in the 80's but quite humid....for us anyways. You people in the South would think nothing of our humidity right now. It is usually so dry here. Sprinkling outside....maybe a downpour is on the way.

I have not planted any seeds except for some Fall cucumbers.....

Nicole, I mailed your items on Friday. Hope it gets there just fine. I haven't been online much since then. Got new glasses for "reading and the computer" and just now able to deal with using them much. Quite an adjustment for my eyes and I have to go back and forth from these to my regular glasses throughout the day.

Our weather is still really nice here, but we once again need rain. My tomato plants are full of blossoms but I think the nights are too cool and they won't develop fruit. I have seen pollinators on them so I guess it's the shorter daylight and night time temperatures that are affecting them. I am picking peppers though. That plant did great.

Today is the official day that Fall starts! 🥳 Bring on the cooler weather.

Yesterday was a good productive day in the garden. I was able to pull out the last of the spring marigolds and pull weeds for the spot I want to plant some turnips soon. Jeanne, we need rain over here too! It's been a few weeks since we had a good downpour.

Sharon, your envelope arrived! (Actually may have arrived yesterday - it's quite a walk to the mailbox so I don't go everyday.) Anyway, a big thank you. Cute card and the seeds you sent are perfect (marigolds, lettuce and dill). Sharon also enclosed some recipes and a floral sticker and a lavender fragrance sachet. What fun. I am on a roll this Fall! I was able to plant some carrot seeds in the garden. We even had some rain showers the last two days to help with watering. 🥳 My ginger stalks are coming along and I have a few peppers growing on the heatless jalapeno bush. How's everyone's week and garden going?
