I'd have a path with a slight S curve in it. Use hoses to outline possible paths. Too straight and it has no organic feel. Too curved and people cut across the curves in a straight line.

I don't know why you'd put crushed limestone around the gazebo. I'd put flowers.

Placing the stairs at the front left corner seems OK given the size of the deck. Still room for seating

Flagstone Pathway: I definitely would like to have a more organic feel, while taking into account that the backyard slopes both ways, 😂. Q/ How wide and how would you suggest laying the flagstone?

Crushed limestone border: I’m thinking that the border will have native plants, such as silver sage (cenizo) and cherry sage, to echo what we have in the front yard:

My first thought:

Wood stair, limestone, AND crushed rock?

Sounds jumbled to me. Like putting limestone on a brick house.

@dan1888 Stair: We have a deck with 12 steps on the right side of the house, but it's too low for a seating area because the lot slopes in two directions. After considering a full redesign (thanks, @simplynatural), we've decided to keep the existing structure and improve access. The plan is to add a new stair with 5 steps on the left side, with a shorter, more direct access to the backyard, using the same wood and cable railing materials as the main deck.

*TREES. While there is a lovely row of trees at the very back of the backyard, there are no trees along either side of the neighbor's fences, except for the grove area with the gazebo on the left. I want to add more trees on the sides for privacy and for wildlife habitat. We have been nurturing saplings from the Arbor Day Foundation, and they are now about 2 feet tall. The cooler days and upcoming rain will be a great opportunity for planting these new trees, I would appreciate your advice on the best locations for them:

(1) Sargent Crabapple, (2) Washington Hawthorn, (2) White flowering dogwood, (1) Pink Crape Myrtle.

Here is a picture of the proposed path. The final path will be about 4 feet wide and will curve around the septic tank, which is by the 4 green lids. It will slope down before bending back toward the higher corner of the gazebo. What do you think of this?
