I agree with @nicholsworth Z6 Indianapolis. Have Bert bring the pots in, later in...October (or even November). The weather is too good ie warm to try to force them into dormancy now.

My experience is they are good outside till you have to worry about freezing and thawing outside in the pots.….gotta beat the snow. Bert would have a garden chore.

Here in Illinois United Health was awful to deal with when I worked in a huge clinic years ago. The clinic refused to accept United for awhile. I hope thing are different in Wisconsin and that United has improved.

I lived in the Chicago area where my grandmother grew the "green one and and green and white one" in the space between the neighbors Chicago bungalos. Now I'm in California where we don't get the cold weather. Hostas go dormant when temps get below 40 degrees at night. That doesn't happen overnigt. Weeks..... They don't care after that, unless you let them sit outside and freeze and thaw a bunch of times. Let your husband do the work. 21 pots isn't like a big deal. Well, unless they are 15 gal pots!!! haha.

The IMPORTANT THING is for you to get your surgery done. Hostas are replaceable,YOU aren't.

I think waiting would be better too. Maybe you could gather them together or anything else that would make it easier to move them later or keep them watered until they are in your garage. You probably shouldn't be lifting though, just supervising.

Wishing you the best to get through your surgery and begin your healing process - you have my sympathies dealing with the insurance tangle! I'd definitely let Bert help (under your direction and give the plants as much time outside as the weather allows and he can water them as needed). This is just based on what I would ask of my dh and he'd feel good doing it - since my guy retired he's been learning and happy helping.

So sorry you've got covid on top of the shoulder , that's a lot ! Get well soon !

Sounds good! Covid indeed making rounds. Yes , you are going to breeze thru surgery and tough out recovery. Worse could happen some pots and hosta will not survive. Ok noted. Next summer will be mc dreamy...

I'm also in z5 and I'd wait until late Oct to bring the pots in too. But, omg, how lucky are you to have covid now?! I would make sure your surgeon knows about it now, just in case it can affect the timing of your surgery.

eta: I did some research and believe that having covid now will affect your surgery date.

Party, I hope not. I had to move my date back month so that everything would be covered because of this stupid dispute between Ascension Wisconsin and United Healthcare. If they don’t settle by October 1 my doctors and hospital will be out of network . I would not be able to afford that.

Also I failed to mention that my pots are ceramic and have to go in by the first freeze. Probably should have mentioned that in the beginning. Duh! 🙄

Debra, I’m catching up on the posts. Sorry to hear about you having Covid right now. It’s known for knocking you down for a while with fatigue, even after you start to feel better from other symptoms.

And the other thing about dealing with insurance is always a pain. There’s so much that’s out of our hands. I’m sending good thoughts that it all works out as it should. And hoping you have the best outcome asap!

I also have hostas in pots to over winter, so this is helpful advice for me, too. My luck with that has not been the best.

Last year was my first year and they all survived! I was shocked! 😳

Debra, I am hoping you are feeling better from that covid, and you are able to get your surgery over. You will zip through this, and all your hostas will be ok. Husbands make better movers of hostas anyway. Make sure you do your recovery therapy. Future hosta lifting is counting on it.
