I'd replace your small table with an enclosed shoe rack. Add artwork or a mirror above the rack. Maximize space organizers in your closet so all shoes and bags will fit behind the closed door. Add small baskets to the cubbies above the bench to organize the little stuff. Finally, add a more interesting rug that compliments the rest of your home's decor.

I agree with Kicksychick. It is not about closing off the space -- I think it is about selecting storage that make the stuff in the mudroom not so visible.

I would take out all of this whole area in red and replace with a built-in that has better storage to conceal your stuff. This whole wall with storage/hanging/drawers and put a narrow bench where the console is.

Fwiw our mud room area is seen on the way to the powder room so we try to keep it tidy - when my boys were younger I bought large canvas totes for each family member, mongrammed them and hung them on each of their hooks (kids hooks were lower for access) - they were easy to use and so great for coralling all the little things (we would often just take them with us in the car if we were in a hurry) and looked buttoned up when hanging, just an idea

Honestly I’m baffled by all the people saying not to close it off. If you don’t want an open mistook then change it. All the tips about being nearer or keeping it tidy are kind of useless. If this was working for you it soundly he a dilemma

I'm with you. I mean, what's the big deal to put a door there? I have a door to the mudroom. If it's just me all day and I don't care what things look like I leave it open; if someone's coming over I shut the door. Even if the room isn't a mess that day, it just looks nicer to have it closed off. All the storage space in the world isn't going to change the fact it's a working entryway, for either of us -- it'll make it look nicer, no doubt, but it's still a storage room for coats and shoes and whatnot.

For those suggesting a door, what kind of door would you suggest?

It looks like a wide opening, so if it were me I'd drywall over some of the opening to get it a standard door width and go from there. Maybe take 1/2 from each side, but you do need to consider opening/closing of teh closet door you have in there and flow into the other rooms.

If it’s closed up I would probably remove the existing closet and make more open shelving and storage there and then put a regular door across the front. You could also do a combo of cupboards and open storage. Others have suggested the locker type set up with a spot for each person. We have that but even then I wanted a door to keep it out of sight

Closed storage and honestly only the things NEEDED eveyday stored there . That means one pair of shoes perpeson and breif cases and back packs taken to the rooms

Extend the existing closet and put all your stuff away behind closed doors. If you can't manage that, then close that hall off from the rest of the house.

Don't just put in a door - rethink the entire space for better functionality.

Remove the closet and add some built in with doors, so you can hid the "mess".

^^ These pics with cabinets that look like lockers remind me of....a locker room. That isn't something I'd want to see every time I pass by. Am I at home or at the gym? A door would be a requirement for me if I had a set-up like that.

It's a mudroom, an entryway and drop-off space. Makes no difference if it visually seems tight, not spending time in there doing anything but entering and dropping off, and slipping shoes on/off.

Another thought is to extend the closet that is currently there to give you a large storage closet - matching the doors in your home. On the opposite wall where the console is you could add a shoe cabinet. Hang the mirror above it and add a tray to lay your keys/wallet.

The rug is have is very functional, but you could consider swapping it for a decorative machine washable rug to add some color in the space.
