tile guy used blue instead of gray

Last week, the tile installers used bright blue grout instead of the pale gray we wanted. The shower has not been used and I was wondering if we could take the gray and go over the blue to cover it up. It’s not traditional tile, it’s the river rock look, and the grout is pretty substantial between the rock pieces.

They are not responding to our requests for them to come back and fix their mistake so I think we are on our own with fixing this.

That IS gray grout. It often changes color from the bag or sticks that you use to select it. You can get in there with an eloxy grout colorant and artists brush and chane the color. Again, the color you choose may not be what you end up with.You have to know your grouts here.

Also, why was that niche built to be so impossible to clean???

It literally say blue on the label of the grout, the right color is called platinum. So, is that a “no” we can’t cover it with the gray?

Did you contract/scope of work specify the type/color of grout to be used? If the grout color was specified in the contract - or in texts/emails between you and the contractor - then the contractor will be responsible for remedying the issue. I don't understand why any tile installer would select a grout color without the customer's approval.

What type of grout has been used? If Mapei Flex ColorCQ was used, you can add grout over the grout that has been installed (it will stick to itself). If not, you will have to remove around 2/3rds of the installed grout in order to add new grout.

Can we see a photo further away? I agree that this might be one of those ” happy accidents.”

Although it’s hard to understand how this could happen because they would have had to really work at figuring out that blue!

Have you paid in full? If you still owe money, don’t pay another dime until the work is corrected. If you have paid in full you will probably never hear from them again.

There is nothing subtile about that blue and black combo. Sorry it is what they used, if you did specify grey. (Is your floor rock? Why did you decide to place it in the niche?)

Otherwise, their work looks really impressive. Look at how they aligned the star cuts in that super tiny niche. Great skills.

This is the floor. I’m not sure why they chose to put the rocks in the niche, those were not the instructions I gave. At this point I just want it to be usable without spending another two weeks making a mess and cleaning it up. I wasn’t here when this was being done so I found all of this after it was too late to not pay or make a change. I really just want to paint the inside of the niche with something that will make it a neutral color and call it a day.
