Kitchen cabinet help with Brazilian cherry floors

last month

We are redoing our kitchen but want to keep our Brazilian cherry hardwood floors if possible. We currently have off white creamy shaker cabinets that are 30 plus years old. We would like to get white oak slab European style or slim shaker. We have decided to either stick with slim shaker creamy white or one of the following white oak varieties. Any help would be appreciated

Not the middle. I like bottom/far right.

Looking at photos isn't always a perfect representation. Not loving any of those options, so I would keep looking.

Yes, that is the tone is we are looking for.

That looks like alder with a golden pecan kind of stain. I did this in my last home and it worked well with reddish floors (Saltillo tile and the same Brazilian cherry hardwoods)

I would select a darker stain, not a lighter stain.

I asked Microsoft Copilot (AI) for the best cabinet colors for use with cherry floors:

For fun, I then asked Copilot to visualize SW Evergreen Fog cabinets with cherry floors:

I would get a sample of Sherwin Williams evergreen fog. The online color sample looks different on my computer compared to the computer generated pic. I do like greens with Brazilian cherry floors. Sages are great too.

I really like that pic with Evergreen Fog as well! I did not like any of the wood samples in the various pics above with those cherry floors. I vote a green.

I think that you should pull a wood tone from your floor and use that for your cabinets. I agree with Beverly that darker tones will look best. Green does help neutralize reds but I would get tired of it. If you want to add lighter colors then consider doing countertops that are light. The blue and white quartzite shown in a wscruise’s post would look beautiful in your kitchen.

I would not do any of the three. They are lovely, but there is a distinct wood grain pattern. I think any of the three installed will disappoint you. You have one of the most beautiful hardwood floors and a "wood" grain cabinet will not be able to look as classy. Go with a paint finish and let those floors be the star. Either paint the cabinets you have (bet they are great quality) or replace with a high end painted cabinet.

Match the white to your wood trim. Consider a low sheen finish.

Thank you everyone for your help…we have a lot of deciding to do still. I really like a Carrara marble countertop with any wood species. We will look for either a wood species with minimal graining or go with painted cabinets

I am never fond of mixing wood species in any permanent install . I like the color of the cabinets you have but if cararra is the plan for the counter then make sure whatever shade of white you use works with the slabs you choose . I think a simple slab door would be a nice change but not sure about your style. Actually I see mostly slab doors in your idea books maybe even a high gloss if your style runs contemporary

Cherry flooring is not easy and I assume you want a light kitchen, but consider leaning into the cherry’s undertone. To keep it feeling light, consider two toned cabinets and the Carrara will pop. The style of cabinetry/lighting/ hardware will have a huge influence as well. Similar to below, but with your flooring and a complementary stain on the lowers for a modern, yet classic feel.

If not a fan, suggest painted cabinetry. It’s a huge decision and the more on line examples you see and tes, the easier it will be.

This is an example of the look we were looking for. Thank you again for all your suggestions!

I've had Brazilian cherry floors for 20+ years. Ours don't read "red"; could be the sun, or just how they darkened? Most of our furniture is cherry wood in a darker stain, but our kitchen has white painted maple cabinetry with marble countertops. I like both with the flooring. I don't know that lighter wood stains go so well?

Adding: when we installed the floors, I planned to get area rugs everywhere. We loved the floors so much, that we have never done it. We still love them as does everyone who visits.

    "Green does help neutralize reds"

This misconception is always posted here.

Green cabinets will NOT neutralize red Brazilian cherry floors. Green only neutralizes red when the paint colors are mixed, not when the two colors are side by side. On the contrary, due to a concept called "simultaneous contrast," green next to red makes the red look redder, since they are complementary colors, opposite on the color wheel.

In the image below, do the green dots neutralize the red background?

But to answer your question, I think the floors are beautiful and would look great with green cabinets. Or off-white.

To me, wood cabinets with that hot toned wood floor is a LOT of warmth (too much for me). I'd do a creamy white paint or a sage green as others have said. I know you may just want a change after years of painted white-ish cabinetry, but it was probably chosen because it's an excellent choice with the existing hard finishes.

Slightly off topic, I agree, Diana! Painters (artists) know that about side-by-side complementary colors vibrating off each other, quite the opposite of mixing them together. Whenever I see people trying to neutralize their honey oak trim or cabinets with blue or gray-blue wall paint, I sigh. You have to steer into the skid if you want to minimize a wood (or tile) in a room, not pick its opposite.
