help kitchen Reno for new home

last month

We just bought a new home but want to update it more to our tastes. We like minimalist modern with off white and black finishings. The flooring and appliances need to stay for now. But we are thinking of: turning the island and getting a larger one, lighten the kitchen cabinets, change back splash to lighter as well.

Asking for opinions on island. I would love a larger rectangle that has seating on both sides (overhang). I love granite and we have granite but not sure if a large island will be out of budget. The other counters are also granite but if I get a larger island I’ll need a new counter top. Then do I need to change all counters?

Thoughts and ideas are appreciated!

Suggestion: LIve with the kitchen as is for 6-12 months before making changes. The island can be a different granite from the perimeter.

What does lightening the cabinets mean? You want to paint them? That alone could break the budget.

You can have different granites on the island and perimeter if the coordinate. Do you like the perimeter granite?

I'd take this step by step. First see if you can afford a new island.

A new backsplash and new lights alone would do wonders for changing up this space. Remeber that the floor is going to dictate a lot of this look and nothing about it is exactly modern.

Yes it is vogue for the island and rest of the cupboards to be different. I look at your kitchen and see nothing but modern--except for the back splash and countertops. It's always great advise to do nothing until you've lived in a space for awhile. You may find more pressing needs in your new home. A kitchen is a very expensive place to begin and nothing about yours screams PRIORITY. Aesthetic is the least issue, FUNCTION should be number one. Solid white counters with same back splash, paint out the island white maybe put a black solid surface on it. Two tone, modern, clean lines a whole lot cheaper than painting perfectly good cabinetry. Your island appears large as is. Getting a larger counter that hangs over the edge for better seating on two sides that don't infringe on kitchen walk space could be worth thinking about. The design of present island impedes how many can sit at it. The frame work creating the inset on each end is unnecessary and cramps the stools.

    " Turning the island......." ???

You wait until you are in. You do a hard measure of every foot and inch in the kitchen.

Every wall, window opening ,EACH with a dimension.

There is nothing in this kitchen you can't live with , for six months or longer.

    As to granite?

"You can have different granites on the island and perimeter if they coordinate."

    No.........

If you use granite, the only "coordinate" would be a solid black with another something : ) granite.

"The flooring...needs to stay for now." Why change anything if you are planning to change the floor at any point? The white floor is the outlier here, so I agree with everyone to wait until you have lived in the home for a good long while before you start changing anything. Start an ideabook with kitchens you love, and start planning a new layout if necessary. Then save up for the large $$$ outlay you'll need to really make this a kitchen for your taste.

Good advice already - you’d need to replace the flooring if you changed the orientation of the island as there is likely not flooring underneath. Agree to just move in and enjoy for a while - looks like a nice bright space ✨

No change for at least 6 months is always good advice. I cannot see the advantage to turning the island and I never like seating in my work space . The floors will need a redo if that island is touched at all except for new counter . I like most of the cabinets but that island does not say modern or minimalistic to me . I for sure would not paint those if modern is the plan and all LED 4000K lighting and more modern pendants is where I wuld start That backsplash is horrible with that counter , see it starts little and balloons quickly into a major rework.I dislkke a layout where I pass the renage on the way from fridge to sink so that needs to addressed too. Slow down and wait to do this right
