What rug should I get?

last month

This rug is 12' x 15' and is wearing out (lots of loose fibers) after just a few years, as it was an inexpensive placeholder. Now I am ready to get a real rug, but having trouble deciding what I want. It needs to go with the rug in the back of the room (cream witrh navy polkadots) and with the rug in the entry, a round medium blue woven vinyl by Chilewich. I want to keep the look modern, so no faux orientals for me, but I'm willing to consider anything else, especially Flor carpet tiles. Help!!

Your exisitng rug is too large for this room. I have marked the size on the photo.

BeverlyFLA, I had thought that this rug was the right size, and that the polkadot one was too small. Isn't it better to have the front legs of the TV console on the rug?

Simplynatural, I had not thought of green, but I love the way it changes this room! Do you have a source for the last rug? (in case I win the lottery)

The other rug in the back area appears to be grey and blue, so I looked at these on Rugs.com by Jill Zarin in 9x12.

It isn’t better to have the front legs of the console on the rug. Rug edges can go up close to the front legs of wood furniture pieces, but definitely don’t need to be on them and better if all legs are on the wood floor for stability, anyway. I would think a 9 x 12 or an 8 x 10 would work. You need to have the seating furniture group on the rug as in BeverlyFLADeziner’s post, but you certainly don’t need to spend the extra $ for another 12’ x 15’.

Some ideas for you. These are Wayfair.

“Isn't it better to have the front legs of the TV console on the rug?”

No, as already posted. Beverly’s example with the seating pieces anchored on the rug looks good.

Sheila, you can upload your photo at Rugs Direct and other sites and they will insert rugs you like into your photo.
Another rug shopping hint is to buy the smallest size of rugs you are considering to test it in your space (if the site has free shipping and returns). It will be much easier to return a small one!

You don't want the traffic walkway going over 1/3 of the area rug.

Sheila, that last rug is called Bordered Overture by Delos on rugsdirect.com.

Okay, everybody has convinced me that 9 x 12 is the size I need. Now I just need to find something similar to the one I like best, the Bordered Overture that simplynatural posted, but at a more affordable price. What I like about it is the simple, large scale graphic style and the blue and green colors. Thanks for all the other photos that people posted; they really helpoed me to make up my mind.

I did a google image search of the green rug with blue border and it gave me these results -LINK . Although they don't look much like the blue border rug, they are nice greens and may be more in your price range.

Part of what is so spectacular about the color of the rug you love probably comes from it being beautifully dyed wool. It is hard having expensive taste isn't it?

Love your wood furniture, and always love a room with distinct seating areas.

Maybe a carpet store could make a green rug with a navy border from broadloom carpeting? (I have no idea what that would cost, though.)

Thanks Kendrah, your link has expired, but I had great results googling "contemporary blue and green rug". I liked some of the ombre ones, but didn't find the right combo of size and color. What do folks think of this one?

Look for one thta has some of the color of accents in th space but a more neutral background. I might even go more graphic like this

Here's the Modern - Milano Green rug in the room:

I don't like the shade of green as well, but it could work.

Here is a pretty, simple 9x12.

I don't think the modern Milano does your room justice. You are on the right track. Keep looking.

You aesthetic is totally outside my wheelhouse, so I may be really off with these suggestions. But here goes -

This is from West Elm so the price is right. And I like how it plays off of your blue dots in the back of the room.

    Solid color of the Milano.

    Insanity. I love-hate it.

Thanks, everyone. I agree, the Modern Milano is a little too brown for my room. I've not had any experience with washable rugs - I wonder how they look and feel? And I'm intrigued by the one you labeled Insanity - especially since I'm a retired psychiatrist!

Do you have pets or are prone to spills for another reason? In my opinion washable rugs look great because your eyes can forgive the cheap look as a compromise for easy cleaning. If this is not your situation, then stick to a regular rug.

The view outside your windows look like framed art of wonderful greenery. Think about how the green of your rug works with your views.

Following bc I love your room and also bc I've been looking at green rugs a few years and haven't found anything perfect yet.

I love how the green really brightened your space.

@simplynatural do have a link or company where you found those first 2 green rugs in your first post?

Yes, both are also from rugsdirect.com. The first one is Kerman and the second is Brooks 490890.

  • last month

The first one should be called Kermit; but it's the best color match to the greenery outside my windows, and I like it second best after the expensive one. But I wonder if a darker green would look better at night, since I usually leave the curtains open and the landscape is lit by a low voltage system?

You could do what is often suggested here: order the smallest size of each and see which you like best in the space, in all lighting conditions.
