kitchen range hood and island lighting

last month

I’m trying to figure out how to balance sconce lights on either side of our large range hood and how to best select height and size to balance kitchen pendants that will go in over kitchen island directly in front/sightline of the range. I’ve found pictures of different sconces but am struggling to find pictures that also have pendants. I know layered lighting is ideal so while I could skip pendants, I am pretty committed to having both. Do I go minimal on sconces (small in stature and overall size) or larger bc range hood is approx 5 ft tall. Ceiling is slope … on short side ~9 ft and high side ~11 ft. I will have a Shelf ledge backsplash of Taj Mahal across entire wall.

Also…measurements , backsplash will be 23 inches off counter, range hood “bottom” will be 34 inches above stovetop. And I have a pot filled that will be towards top of backsplash.

Too many doodads. You don't want ceiling acne. Have 1 focal point, and use recessed for the rest.

No pendants. Maybe no sconces. It depends on the plan. But edit and simplify all of everything.

Everything can’t be a star. pick 1 thing that is special here. Not 9.

"I’m trying to figure out how to balance sconce lights on either side of our large range hood"

    1. What is the need for sconces as the insert hood contains lights?
    2. The pictured hood is massive. Is it appropriate for your much simpler kitchen design?
    3. Shouldn't the wall or ceiling duct for the range hood be visible at this stage?

One from each category is not how you design and have it come out as anything other than chaotic. Design is intention. It creates focal areas, and uses supporting players to emphasize them. Chocolate chips, capers, and harissa are all great in various recipes. Not in the same dish.

Julie S: "But the wires for those sconces need to be coming out centered over the pieces of counter flanking the range..."

Those wires could be for the range hood, assuming that the hood is wider than the range which is recommended.

Here’s an updated picture with electrical sconce locations adjusted and correct! Thanks all for the input.

To answer question on hood - it’s a 48 inch range (I know there’s VERY strong opinions on that size of range on Houzz but my husband always wanted one and has been committed to it), so alas the large range hood. Wanted input on small sconces on either side of range.

I’ll come back and post my final lighting selections of course!

    1. What's the brand and model of the range?
    2. Did you confirm that the range hood insert uses a cord that plugs into a wall outlet and is not hardwired to the j-box?
    3. Where is the exhaust duct for the range hood, in the ceiling?

I don't have a problem with someone having a 48 inch range. We have one too. People just like to be like "Who needs that?" Meanwhile there are many things people don't actually need but have. Tile? Who needs tile when a painted backsplash works fine. Quartzite or marble counters? Who needs that when laminate counters function just fine. Don't understand why people alway question why someone wants a 48 inch range. With that being said do you have makeup air?
