Add a few photos - if you think that it might be do to roots, make sure that you take a photo from farther back. We need to see the tree(s) and how close it's planted + what type of tree(s) it is (certain trees will cause damage to a driveway - others won't.

When was driveway installed (how old)?

How old exactly I don't know, but the house was built in 1989 and when I bought it in 2003, the driveway looked to be about the age of the house.

The right door neigbour has a very big aspen in the corner of her lot that is almost in line with the crack, about 90 feet further.

Try uploading ONE jpg picture in a comment. Wait to hit ”submit” until after the photo fully loads - when you first do it, the photo looks grayed which means it’s not done yet.

Double check to make sure the photos are jpegs. A while ago, my phone switched the default format to heic. I had to switch it back to post photos here.

This your crack?

no, that crack was there when I bought the house, and it never grew. The one that is concerning me is perpendicular to that one, and is growing bigger and bigger really fast. I will try posting photos later on.

Here's the photos, with a close-up of the neighbour's huge aspen tree.

Like I said before, this crack started as a hairline crack mid-July and has grown to about 3/4 of an inch in some places. And now the right hand side of the crack has started lifting from the left hand side, by about 1/2".

It doesnt appear to be coming from the direction of the tree, so thats probably not it. Have you contacted a driveway company to come and look at it. It might be a good idea.

Your neighbor's tree has nothing to do with the crack. A control joint was never installed, so the driveway made its own. Clean it out and fill it.

Joseph Corlett.LLC is correct , filling it will go a long way in slowing or stopping it. As for the cause, unlike some who can tell what causes something simply by looking at a picture of damage, I need facts to help diagnosis a problem.

Does soil in your neighborhood (areas not irrigated) form similar cracks during long dry spells? Does rainwater run down, across or pond near the drive?

I agree the crack must be filled sooner than later, but I wanted to see what you guys think. I do have an asphalt company coming over to look at it next week.

Soil in my area is mostly clay, I have never noticed cracks like this forming in the soil. The driveway is on a slight incline towards the street, water from downspouts go into a water collection cistern, and the only rainwater that hits the drive is rain that actually falls onto the drive, and it runs towards the street, which has a storm drain about 5 feet to the right of the drive.

What concerns me about this crack is the fact that unlike the other cracks, which have been fairly stable for the past 20+ years, this one grew from nothing to a huge gaping crack in only 3 months. I would hate to fill the crack and see it expand again the next week.

Speaking of filling the crack, once the cause of the crack has been identified, I suppose I should ask the asphalt company for a quote rather than try to fill it myself?
