Renewal By Anderson Backdoor Threshold Issue

last month

My parents had a new backdoor installed recently. The threshold is missing the second piece that would help to make the threshold flush against the block sill. The company is saying that there is no piece missing and it is purposely that way for drainage. I've included a few photos of the back threshold as well as a picture of the front door threshold for reference. It is a tripping hazard at best!!!

I was wondering if anyone else has dealt with a similar issue with Renewal By Anderson. If so what did you do to rectify this issue.

Thank you in advance!!

@ Patricia, I spoke with the sales rep yesterday. She said she spoke with the shop manager I beleive. They said that all of there doors and door frames are all the same regardless of what door you purchase from them. So they both had no remedy for the issue. They said that if you do anything to add a piece on top of the sill it would void the warranty because they build it that way for drainage purposes. On our old door the bottom piece of rubber came out farther and was gradually slopped down onto the sill it also didn't appear to have any holes for water drainage.

Not familiar with RBA Entry Doors I would post this in the window forum section as the guys there may be more familiar.

I've used various types of threshold extensions, usually after replacing a door and jamb, but sometimes to fix a problem like you show with an existing door.

They often needed to be modified to work, but aluminum cuts easily with standard carpentry tools.

This is exactly what I'm looking for!!! Is there a way to attach something like this without messing up the integrity of product that was installed. My parents paid a lot of money for the door, I'm certainly not trying to void any warranty's. I just want to make it safe for all of us!!

Unfortunately adding anything to the threshold will void and Andersen warranty guaranteed.

"Renewal by Andersen" is a VERY expensive, outsourced brand, done by "private" contractors and at least double the price of purchasing a good brand name door and hiring a contractor.

When we had bids by them, I found them to be very shady.

With that being said, the caulking job at the bottom of your door is anything but professional!

There is a website called betterdoor.com that has lots of options, and you may be able to get some input and advice from them.

I don't know why extending your threshold would "void" your warranty.

I would be more concerned that your installers did not use a door sill pan or at least the proper flashing to prevent water intrusion.

@PPF. Can you possibly send me the link to the product at the top of your picture? I think that might be the best solution. I wanted to be able to look it up and see if that would work for what I need. Thank you!

@millworkman, IIRC, Renewal windows are made by Andersen, but are only sold through companies that also install them. When one of the companies did a bid for us, it was "high pressure sales", with little to no detail or breakdown in the pricing.

I know my husband and I laughed at their quote, as it was outrageous!

Have you had a different experience with them?

Have you tried contacting the company themselves and ask if it should have been built with a sill extension. I feel it should have been. They may have more influence than you with the company that installed it once they see the pictures.

No, I have not contacted the company directly. I've only spoken with the tech that came out to the house and the sales rep who sold us the door.

Exactly, I feel like all doors have some sort of threshold extension. That is why when we contacted them the first time, we thought a "piece" was missing. That piece would have been the extension. A technician came out to fix the trim molding on the inside of the door. We asked him about it and he said everything was correct. We contacted the sales rep that sold the windows and this door to us. She contacted the warehouse manager. They both said that what was installed is all that they provide. She said she would have the manager call us directly to discuss but so far they have not.

There excuse is that it is built that way for drainage purposes. There are two small circles on the top part of the threshold and then 2 circles in the front part as well. They said the 2 circles in the front are the drainage holes.

Basically, there is nothing else they will do from there end saying that the door and frame package are correct the way it was installed.

So we are going to have to figure out, what we can do in terms of adding an extension without voiding the warranty.

You are not adding anything to the door, there is no issue with voiding the warranty.

i Just meant if we add an extension similar to the picture you had posted and it "covers up" the drainage holes, of there door piece. Its a very expensive door and I dont want any issues with the company saying something down the road if we ever needed to get work done on it.
