Geranium macrorrhizum, Geraniaceae

Hi everyone,

I had planned on planting a large dry, shady area under maples at my daughter's house with geranium macrorrhizum. I have found this plant to be a reliable grower in such conditions.

I started with about 10 or so plants last year and the year before, which I bought on sale online. Now, I can't seem to find this plant anywhere. I am looking for the straight species, not any cultivars, but it seems mostly only the cultivars are for sale.

I was always under the impression that this was a common, easily-available plant. At least, years ago when I first started using it, I could easily find it. Now, the only place I can seem to locate it is at Bluestone. In general I have no problem with Bluestone, but it's just that it's fifteen bucks a pop there. Maybe I'm wrong and need to change my mindset, but it seems paying $15 for a little pot of this is almost - not quite, but ALMOST - like paying $15 for a pot of pachysandra or vinca lol. It's just not done, not when you can get handfuls and handfuls for free from any gardener more than happy to share.

So, a few questions....

Am I wrong? Is GM a harder plant to find than I thought? Is it worth paying the same for this as one would any other perennial? Do I need to give it a bit more respect lol?

Can they be grown from seed? Anyone with any experience? Finding a few references to seed, but thinking this may be a bit difficult. Haven't looked into it much yet

Anyone have experience with Geraniaceae? They have a great price but their whole shipping process seems a bit wonky. I place an order without knowing shipping cost, they will "consult" with me, yada yada, I send them a check when I get my order.... Sounds like a lot. I have heard of them before but just wondering if anyone has done business with them before.

Lastly, anyone remember when Bluestone usually starts their end of season sale? I keep watching for it but they have nothing posted. I bought all my other GM plants from their sale, but prices have gone up in general, and it's getting late in the season.

Thanks for any input you can give!

:)

Dee

Oh... my... gosh... You can all pretty much disregard this post. My memory is officially gone lol. Just gone.

Instead of searching FIRST, after I posted I just thought, hmm, let me do a search on GM and Geraniaceae here on the forums. Well guess whose post was the first to pop up?

    Mine.

    From three months ago.

    Sigh.

Sorry guys lol. I am going to slink away and do some internet research on memory enhancement.....

Digger, I'm zone 6B/7A but it's already too late to do what I'm about to advise you, so wait until spring. G. maccrorhizum with it's long roots is the easiest plant in the world to get starts from. Just pull out a rhizome by hand, make a slit in the ground where you want it, pull dirt over it. You can do this all season as plants grow. You certainly don't need to buy new plants if you have even one. I have a large area of them and also large areas of G. 'Karmina' and 'Biokovo' all treatable in the same way.

The geranium nursery you wondered about is reliable and honest

ive ordered there 3 times. i understand your questioning the shiping costs but i considered them fair and in line with others and far less thsn Bluestone which always seems very expensive.

I bet good $ that i could rip up handfuls of geranium m, throw it in a mailer envelope and you could plant them and theyd do fine!

@diggerdee zone 6 CT, I have done this so many times!

I have used macrorrhizum tons in the past but I think this is the first year I have bought some with the white flowers.

Following what @laceyvail 6A, WV said, I once ordered root sections from an Etsy seller and they did very well and it was cheaper than buying plants and paying to ship soil.

Hi yes, sorry! I did see this yesterday but just didn't have time to respond. And actually now that I re-read the whole thread I see I never responded to kitasei or Marie after they were so kind to offer me some from their gardens. Shame on me! I'm sorry for the rudeness and thank you for your generosity!

kitasei, my husband and I usually go upstate to the Rhinebeck area once a year so maybe if we go this year I will let you know! We can take a little side trip to Cortlandt Manor (which ALWAYS reminds me of the soap opera All My Children lol!). Thank you!

Marie if you really can send me some that would be fantastic. I am happy to pay you for them. I'm guessing your prices are better than Bluestone's! ;) Please message me if you don't hear from me soon.

laceyvail, thanks for that info. I know you all have said how easy they are to root, but to be honest, I didn't want to divide the plants up because they were so small. However this spring I am quite happy with the way they are finally starting to fill out, so perhaps I will try divvying them up this year.

But I need SOOOOOOO many. These are for a dry, empty area that runs along the boundary fence, at least 80 feet long, I would say, and probably I'd bring it out at least three feet. Nothing grows there so I am hoping to get these established. On one end, where there is more light, I have some shrubs planted and have the GM interplanted, so I just want to continue it all the way up into this dry empty area.

    Thank you all!
