Living room design

last month

This living room has 6 entry points and i hate it. Please tell me how you would have your furniture in this room. I took photos at each entry point

Can you share a floor plan? That will be easier than pictures. That said, off the top of my head, your sofas are very tall so they take up a lot of visual space in the room.

Do you have a specific problem with the arrangement from a functional point of view? Given the traffic paths through the area, I think you have optimized the arrangement of your 2 sofas and TV cabinet. Are the sofas the same length (hard to tell from photo)?

I would pull the rug towards the sofa so that there is a bare floor walking path in front of the TV. Does the TV cabinet come apart in sections e.g. are the side pieces and top separate?

Or are you are planning to buy new furniture?

I would center the credenza on the wall, and remove the plant beside it. I'd also remove the too-tall plant in the other corner.

I prefer to see family portraits in less public areas, but if those 3 stay there I would group them more closely together, with the bottom of the frames aligned.

Lower the clock by a foot. Remove the dangly cord.

I need to know how old you are ? Thsi space looks locked in a brown time warp so important to know. For me the TV cabinet and those bulky sofas are over powering the space ,I need to know more about you. If the plants are real find them homes where they get proper light if fake trash them

There should be a place in hell for the furniture designer who first came up with the design for these big brown puffy reclining sofas! ;-)

I think they are super comfy and made for relaxing and watching tv. They do dominate this space and changing them out for something more low profile will make a world of difference. But you also want to be comfortable in the space you live in and everyone lives differently. If being on the couch and relaxing with TV on is the goal then these are great. They just don’t look amazing sadly.

Until we have dimensions for your floor plan it's difficult to make any furniture layout suggestions. However, I would suggest smaller furniture and I'm showing a neutral colour scheme. the picture shows a sofa and armchair but 2 sofas as you now have would also work.

I would place matching sized chests on either side of the doorway to the bedrooms.

Your room needs a larger rug but doesn't have the space for a sofa and loveseat in the scale you have now. Consider an 'apartment' sized sofa and two chairs.

Replace that dated entertainment unit with a wall mounted media cabinet and larger screen TV mounted above.

The peach colored walls have to go. The shiny finish of the paint on the ceiling is a definite NO. No one puts satin finish paint on the ceiling.

To me, the overall space is overwhelmingly dark. The sofa, wall unit, tables and rug darkens the entire space. I think lightning those items would make a huge difference. Your floors are beautiful and would look amazing if you had them refinished.
I have no idea if any of these items are in your budget.

    You're new to the site:

Tip? Don't use the app on your phone. Use a laptop, or at least an Ipad and BROWSER, Safari, Firefox etc

It will be very easy to edit and scroll back.

    Second? Did you recently move?

Third? Do you love the furnishings you have, and just want a better arrangement?

It's impolite to inquire age, but I see high school or college age kids on the wall. Do you want a fresher, younger, airier feel? Because aside from drown in brown, the furnishings are too heavy, too bulky, too dark, and a bit too aged out for anyone under 80 ?

But? If you're comfy, like what you have? or simply have to live with it for resource reasons? Tell us: )

Comfortable seating need not be large, puffy and unsightly. What you have dominates the space so it looks and feels claustrophobic.

A living room doesn't necessarily require sofas. Depending on how many people need to sit in this area at any given time, you might consider 4 club chairs on swivels, around a square or round table or ottoman. Simpler lines and lighter colors will open up the area and give breathing room.

I've done this layout a few times for clients and they love it.

This client had the wood frame chairs and we purchased 2 identical club chairs for the seating arrangement:

This client purchased 4 identical club chairs. This living room has 4 entry points, but the seating arrangement with 4 chairs is very comfortable.

It all comes down to how the room is used. The pictures you showed, Diana, are of living room spaces where conversation, relaxing etc is the goal. That’s very different than one where tv watching is the primary function.

Not totally true, each of those rooms has a fireplace that could either have a TV over it, or just be a TV on a console table. You could easily watch TV with the layout of 4 chairs on swivels.

  • last month

Sure you could but it wouldn’t be comfortable like the huge reclining set up they currently have. That’s my point. A

The op ( who clearly, very recently moved ) doesn't hate the six entry points to the room, as much as she hates the way her furnishings look in the room. There, I said it. My bet? She knows this..

All of this stuff in here? Maybe 1990 ish purchase date.. Thirty five years ago. If it all combined cost 6k thirty five years ago (and it didn't).......it has all served its time.

They bought the sideboard, the heavy TV beast unit that swallows up the tv. It's all brown. It's all huge. If you put it all on the curbside today? You'd get zero takers.

Can you still FIND these monolithic couches? You can. The big wall unit? Not so much. But you can find a really nice couch, and a couple reclining chairs that don't suck all the air from your room. A less imposing way to support and house a tv.

The sprawl/cosset/curl up for tv viewing can be separated from the effect of a king size bed in a living room.

Is there a fix here? Yes, money. Bev gave her an arrangement up above. But to use West Coast's word? "Sadly" it simply needs new furnishings to reach the potential of what COULD be very lovely.: ) AND comfy. Sorry/ouch.......the ship long sailed on this collection. TV unit too.

I will take that BET.....? !

Nobody lives with a thing they hate for 15 years: )

Nobody just suddenly wakes one day to realize they are in a home with six entry points. ... in their living room.

Nope.......my bet is a move, and will stand 100% corrected if I am dead WRONG.

It's not the six entryways, which bring light and airness into your space, it's the furniture that blocks flow, space, and light. This is what most of the commentors are telling you. Your furniture selections have prioritized the space like a cineplex for TV watching. No layout, really, is going to fix that problem unless you lose some of the light and space sucking furniture.

Your room could feel a little like this with some furniture removals/replacements. I'm allowing one manatee:

A Family Friendly Living Room in Devon · More Info

But here's a compromise. GET RID OF ONE OF BROWN MANATEES, the one facing the front door along with the round and gigantic fake plant and the scroll-y side table: Replace manatee #2 with two smaller armchairs in a light tan or a nice accent color like turquoise and place the armchairs to face the front door with more modern nesting side tables in between:

Interlude Macie Hollywood Regency Gold Round Nesting Tables - Set of 2 · More Info

--Take down the clock and put some art there for the folks in the new armchairs to deemphasize the giant TV armoire.--something vertical and geometric to echo your rug.

Entryway. Put a mirror over the sideboard there and the lamp from your side table. Go for this feeling:

Red Ledges (Oquirrh Mountain Drive) · More Info

Create a photo gallery wall for the family photos where you have the giant fake plant. Frame the photos all the same.

Really, you misidentified the problem--it's the furniture, not the entryways.

    Hi all,

We agree here with BeverlyFLADeziner for the chests, it will give a cosy look to the space. If we have to add something, and tasts are of course different from a person to an other, we will add a rug with more white in it, with few patterns such as a Beni Ourain rug, or a Beni Mrirt rug. (Moroccan rugs) for texture warmth and give a good contrast with the dark grey sofas.

We would love to see the render once you have done your revamp
