Creating Privacy with Floor to Ceiling Window

last month

We have purchased a house with a window 'nook' in the kitchen. Not really loving it but its here and our issue is how to create privacy with the bottom 2 rows of windows which look right over the neighbor and the street beyond. We cannot reconstruct it at this tiime to create a solid wall at that height. Curtains would have to be some sort of set up that would look too cafe like

. and dont really wnat curtains anyway. I thought of cutting inserts for each window but with what? Would love suggestions.

Couple of options. First you can get a frosted insert/panel for the bottom windows. Or you can get blinds that can be open at top and closet at bottom.

You could have a short, three panel hinged screen custom made and faced with wallpaper or fabric and place it in front of the windows.

I don't know why you don't consider short drapery panels on the windows. They can be nicely tailored.

Is it useable space? Otherwise, a collection of potted plants.

Thank you. It is not deep enough to have plant sand a table, sadly

You have very minimal depth and for privacy you do need only the bottom half to be covered. If you go with 1 inch pleated or honeycomb shades that open bottom up and top down and have a light filtering but privacy fabric, you will achieve exactly what you are looking for. Do not use any pull cords or chains...they will be just dangling and might become a threat for children or pets. You can even play around with colors. The picture below is for far bigger window, but it should give you an idea what is possible.

You can apply a film that will give the look of frosted glass. Inexpensive, and easily reversible if you ever want to do something different.

Cafe shutters? (Can't tell if you have enough mounting space at the bay's angles.)

I agree cafe shutters would give the impression of solidity like built-ins. Window coverings for the lowers only might look add.

Exterior shutters might work, the decorative (non-working) louver ones would be flat enough and then just use Velcro to hold them in place.

There is a film you can buy to put on your windows that is 1 way. It will give you privacy while providing light.

I would want a fabulous fern and a live tree or 2 in that space - can’t quite imagine leaving it empty

I used inexpensive window film from Amazon to create privacy in the sidelights next to my front door. The light comes through but any sight is obscured.

I would use a window film. It could be frosted or a beautiful pattern. They come in all kinds of decorative options and it you don't like it, its not permanent and relatively inexpensive.

Fantastic Lori. We did this to our front door sidelights as our dog sadly raged at anyone who dared he on the street. Well worth it.

Wood Shutters. Menards sells them custom made to fit.

Do not use window film - you want to be able to see out, and you may have a cat that wants to look out - you do not want to permanently block being able to see out and also window film looks tacky.

I would go with curtains on a rod at the point you want to cover, and maybe a rod at the top that you may want to leave open all the time.

    @Karen R.

Window film is for bathrooms and would look cheap in the kitchen. Looks cheap in a bathroom too - and also has plastic toxins off-gassing.

And it would be too permanent. She may want to look at sometimes.

Window film can actually look great. Our front door has had it now GP zeven years with zero issues

Not sure film would look good in the breakfast nook, too commercial, like an office buiilding with the squared windows.

What's wrong with full length sheers? Those grids could use some softening.

What is this function of this area? You could do the silhouette shades that are bottom up top down or floor to ceiling sheers

I suggest you install Venetian blinds on the lower part of the glass. This will not only provide you with privacy but also allow sunlight to enter.

I don't see it stated, and I personally can't tell from the picture - how low does the window go? Near floor, table height? And they are fixed windows?

That may affect some of the advice given, or not.

I can’t see it now, so may have imagine it, but I thought there was a comment saying it was floor to ceiling height. It is true that would change potential options in many ways if it was different.

I like the idea of window film. There are so many great options out there.

The shutters sound great too of you have the room to mount them

And you could also do the blinds that can lower from the top

You will also have your table and chairs there so you don't have to do anything too fancy or busy.

    Good luck!

Narrow rectangular pots, with narrow plants. I'm thinking bamboo or mother in law tongue.

@ terrib962 It is not just for bathrooms and is not permenent and easily (and cheaply) changed if they don't like it. There are many beautiful options out there.

Window film is not permanent if you use the type that is applied with a mist of water and a squeegie...ours have been up for years.
