Kitchen cabinet/open storage above refrigerator

I have gone down from a 42 inch built in to a 36 inch fridge. I need suggestions for open or closed cabinetry above the fridge as there is now a big space to fill. The original fridge was 84 inches in height and current one is ;70 inches. There is some molding/filler at the top but also an area of 12 inches from the current filler to the top of refrigerator. I'm not sure whether a new cabinet to match or an open shelf would look better. Any suggestions?

If you can match it, that would be my first choice.

I like the idea of matching the cabinets, but if that is not easily or inexpensively accomplished you could add a shelf over the fridge and use the space for a few larger decorative items.

Matching the cabinet also depends on how old your existing cabinets are. Paint and stain changes over time. Custom matching can be tricky and expensive for just one cabinet.

A friend of mine installed lighting under the top cabinet and randomly placed different sizes of small glass jars with fake greenery. Once it's up there, doesn't look like fake and with the lighting it looks quite nice!

If you can't get a matching cabinet, I would put up a shelf and remove the filler (assuming it's empty space behind it?) Then you can put something up there that is larger and more proportional to the space.

I like lisedv's idea - though you could also put a light up above and have a little herb garden.

The best option would be to match the cabinet. If not, Jennifer's suggestion is a great one. An open shelf with backing to provide extra storage.

If you add a shelf, and/or backing, be sure they are easily removable so you can unplug the unit to clean or service.

Yes thx. May need to relocate the plug lower.

A shelf would just be easy and add a bit of interest on that wall. I see a plug there so hiding that but using it for a LED light would be great too. The bigger issue for me would be the fact that fridge is deeper than the side walls it looks like.. Could be camera angle. A nice colorful bowl or some other decor and done

Adding a cabinet would be best IMO. Am thinking an open shelf would just look like a mistake was made.

At minimum if you can't match the cabinet, put some plywood as a false back to hide the outlet / cord and paint it to match the cabinet. Add a shelf above the fridge and THEN add the baskets.

That seems like a great spot for a wine rack or cookbook shelf. Is it possible to just add some extra face framing in to close in the sides?

Not useful to the existing discussion, but for anyone building somthing new, it seems to me the best way to "future proof" yourself would be 1) Build in an open shelf for decorative items and 2) Go with adjustable knobbies so you could raise or lower that shelf depending upon future refrigerators.

Two options I would consider: Look into having a new fridge surround made since it looks like yours is not only too tall but not deep enough to cover the sides of the refrigerator. If that's too expensive then lower the outlet and put a shelf above the fridge.

I also have a shelf above my fridge where a cabinet used to be because of change in height of new
refrigerator. I use that space to hold my rack for long knives, on one side, and two square baskets where I keep rarely used items (like gravy boat) in one, and plastic leftover containers in the other. Because that basket with the leftover containers is so light weight, it’s easy to get down.
