Opinion on counter space

What do you think about the 12 inches of counter space in between the stove and fridge?

I was thinking about extending the left wall 1ft to be able to have 24in of counter space on the left side of the stove. Any opinions on that?

Why can’t you wanted the range on that wall? What do the other walls in the kitchen look like?

Is there counter on the other side of the ref? Ids the ref a double door or single door? What is the layout like? It all makes a difference.

I have 12" between my stove and ref. As far as the stove goes, it's fine because I have more counter on the other side. My ref is a single door and has no counter on the other side so that 12" counter stinks when I am putting groceries away or taking stuff out ESPECIALLY if I am already cooking on the stove, there is no place to put a bunch of stuff down.

    Can't wait to change it.

No counter on the other side of the ref, it is double door ref.

As Debbi noted, what is the layout of your kitchen? It would be helpful to see pictures so we can provide proper assistance.

This is just a basic design I made but this is the layout, there’s is going to be an island

I always provide enough counter space on each side of a stove or cook-top at least the width of any pot or pan that will ever be on the cooking surface.

Your upper cabinet pattern wasn't working anything. Give your self more room and have equal size cabinets on either side of the range. Base cabinets should probably be all drawers.

We are okay with 18”, it’s better when we don’t have the coffee maker there but other issues force that placement. The other side of the cooktop is the corner counterspace. Last house we had about 6” between cooktop and wall ovens, and 10” plus the corner counterspace on the other side. Before that, we had 11” next to the range on one side, none at all between range and refrigerator. Those 11” (actually an elfa cart with butcher-block top) were golden.

So, the question is, will you add or reduce to 12”? what is going on on the other side? Where and how do you prep, what kind of storage do you have for utensils, etc? Where is there additional counterspace?

Why are you cramming everything together?

#1 You need a filler adjacent to the fridge otherwise you can't open the door

#2 I had 15" next to the range in my last house and HATED it. It was a useless bit of counter. I wouldn't go less than 24" if I were designing a kitchen. Preferably a lot more.

#3 Yes to all drawer bases.

    #4 Where is the sink?

I do have a filler I just did the design quickly to give a basic layout, I have a whole other side of the kitchen that’s bigger than this side. Thanks for the feedback

Show a complete floorplan in 2D. I see a need for 6" to the left of your frig to allow the left frig door to open. I also see a lot of open counter to the right of your cooktop or range. We need the layout to allocate counter for best function. In a more usable layout I'd like 42" between the frig and cooktop for prepping and cooking with a 42" 3 drawer base cabinet for utensil and pot/pan storage below.

Will there be a prep sink on the island? If not, then this is a horrible layout - you will get a lot of steps in, circling the island from the fridge to the sink to the range to the sink...

I have had 12" cabinets, and hated them with a passion. The only use for a 12" base cabinet is for cookie sheets and cutting boards - but next to the range is the wrong place for those.

It is quite a confusing plan. Can you share the floor plan? This can be way better

I ahve no idea about this plan what on earth is that weird "sland" in the center How big is the space ? 12" cabinets are iMO useless where you need to be able to store pots and pans so who the heck is designing this ? I suggest you post a to scale plan here show every window, doorway where those lead and every measuremnt clearly marked , Pos there in jpeg format in a comment . Then all things related to this space dealt with here in comments . I can bet this is a cabinets sales person doing the deisgn and IMO never a good plan That counter space it the busiest space in the whole kitchen , back to the drawing board

I left 12" of upper space on both sides of my stove hood because I do not like the cabinets that close to the stove and to give me some breathing room when cooking.

Ideally you want your major appliances to be at least 4' apart, yet less than 9' apart.

Oh I would change that plan. Why push the stove so far over? Plus, I wouldn't put spice pullouts right next to a range. That cabinet does warm up. You don't need almost 8 ft to the right of the stove. I would pull a 36" base between the ref and stove and go from there.

I do agree the island seems a little odd and is a barrier between the sink and stove. Are you planning on a prep sink? Seating? How far across is the room? Is this what your layout is like now? Can you add plumbing to the stove wall and put in a prep sink?

My design book recommends a minimum counter space of 15" on either side of a range. But you have plenty of space to the right of the range so you could easily make the cabinet to the left of the range wider. Also, a 12" wall cabinet isn't very useful.
