Adding refrigerator capacity to my Butler's Pantry

last modified: 2 months ago

Our retro style fridge at the beach house is lovely, but it is smaller than what we are used to. I need more refrigerator space, especially for entertaining.

I want to add refrigerator space in our small butler's pantry ("BP") between the kitchen proper and the dining room, which has a swinging door that is always propped open. Keep in mind we also have a large "Pantry Annex" ("PA") at the other end of the kitchen where a lot of serveware and small appliances are stored, and we also have a bar armoire in that space.

The BP is very close to the main fridge, and close to the primary sink, D/W and the trash (The K proper also has a sink, D/W and trash and the PA has a sink. But for logistical, ergonomic and aesthetic grounds, I am eyeing a spot in the BP.

Here is the existing BP. The sink is flanked by trash (L) and D/W (R), all "new"

When you are at the sink, this is behind you, all intentionally c. 1904... except the MW

If you noticed boxes on the left in that photo, here is a better view of the boxes, which are sort of a mock up of where we might put new refrigerator space,

Instead of empty boxes, typically we have this cart in that space

I wonder if people's experience with fridge/freezer drawers are not Subzero; I have only had Subzero. Mine have been relatively shallow and either did not have dividers or I took them out. I usually use them for a single layer. I think, as Kendrah mentions, that may be why people don't like drawers; they are too deep?

Did you test it in that corner location? I'd want more space for my elbows and to turn the pastry.

yes I did, which is actually why DH stacked the boxes for me.

Interesting idea about a pastry board but I want it to be the full 28x24 inch area. My entire K and PA is all unfitted and so I don't mind different finishes; in fact i like it.

I think we might try to hit a showroom today, to see about timing and prices and if they can do the little project for us. If I were to consider Cafe, I would have to go see them in person.

My impatient side would rather just buy a fridge and plug it in.

Side note, nothing like taking pics of your space to make you see it more clearly. Even though I have a partial ocean view from this window, I think all the (original wood) needs softening with a WT!

I have never put this much thought into a fridge, LOL, but I think you’re getting the drawers.

I had a chuckle over the idea of you showing up at the store with a big bag full of pans and baking sheets, kendrah. Why not just bring measurements of them?

At our beach house we recently had to replace both the DW and the fridge (the ”old” ones were only 15 years old, grr) and DH made the choices without me. I have seen pictures but tomorrow I will see them IRL for the first time and I hope I don’t hate the fridge. I believe it is about 2” deeper than our old one, not counter depth. Clearly not tragic. But we changed from a side x side to the bottom freezer drawer, which I also do not love but it’s what we have at home too so I’m used to it. We have limited space in both locations so options are limited.

We have a drawer between the fridge and the (bottom) freezer and I think that is handy when I need to put a larger tray in the fridge. However, our drawer is almost always filled with cans of seltzer.

I think you should leave money out of the equation and just get what you want. You can afford anything in this price range....so it's just a matter of what makes you happy. I start to think cheap equals cheap junk and head towards the dollar signs. In real life....I ONLY like bargains if it's an expensive item marked down.

My niece had a Liebherr and had constant service issues but this was about 10 years ago. Might want to check into current models and talk to a service person about their experience. And parts availability.

I can add even more $$ on to this project for you! When I saw the space, I thought a free-standing, panel-ready, column fridge, paneled to match the existing cabinets but made to look like a broom closet is what you need there! 😁

I would prefer a marble slab that I could use where ever I wanted, than a countertop.

If you are using the fridge for prepared trays, I also like the tall, skinny ”broom closet” idea.

However, if you like drawers, that is what you should get.

made to look like a broom closet

Clever. Though you cannot tell from the photos, they did a super job of matching the sink wall (which was a metal cabinet when we bought the house!) to the other side of the BP. But I think if it were closer it'd be hard to match. But if I were not trying to be reasonable budget-wise, id do the subzero drawers w a marble counter. That is the best combo of form and function for me.

The Smeg Fridge looks the most appropriate for the room. Hinges can be easily changed

I agree it looks good, and that surprised me. And i can get whatever side hinged I want. the issue is they say you need 6 7/8" clearance on the hinged side between the wall and the fridge. I don't have that.

    WT = window treatment

Such a charming room that I don’t remember ever seeing. The tile color is wonderful. Thank you. It is kind of tight to photograph. Funny, I chose the tile counter and the woman at the tile store had never done a countertop with tile. But I already had wood in the BP, and both slate and Boos butcher block in the K proper. I could not think of anything else.

My niece had a Liebherr and had constant service issues

I see plenty of complaints about SMEG and Cafe, too. About the only thing I don't see people b!tch about is Subzero, and I have had very good experience with them in three houses over 25 years now.

    just get what you want.

IDK I have both regretted splurges, and regretted cheaping out. That's why I spend so much time thinking about it now.

We have a drawer between the fridge and the (bottom) freezer and I think that is handy when I need to put a larger tray in the fridge. However, our drawer is almost always filled with cans of seltzer.

I think that is how most people use fridge drawers, esp. stand alone. But we don't drink soda or beer, and I like my bottled water at room temp, so we don't need a beverage center.

This one is making me think. Bargain, decent reviews. Not available in cream. No marble counter for me (but Kendrah reminded me I can just buy a big pastry board.)

I think ChatGPT messed up the aspect ratio a bit

PS Oddly, HD has this for nearly $500 less than Lowe's, but neither seem to have it in a store anywhere near either of our homes. So I would have to buy it blind.

PPS I am in the sunroom but all I hear is DH unfurling and recoiling a tape measure He has his thinking hat on, clearly.

PPPS If we buy the white one he wants to paint it to match our LaCornue in the K proper, which is cream. LOL

I was freezer shopping the other day online and saw some smaller upright freezers that converted to refrigerators. Many look like a traditional fridge so that esthetic wouldn't do but I did see this one, It comes as a fridge or frig/freezer. Somewhat like the Smeg.

I'm having tech issues today and can't get the screen shot to insert here.

    Cute fridge, Smeg like Link

That is cute! But the depth is a bit to much for my space.

DH is really iffy about dueling refrigerators. He doesn't like the idea that, as you walk thru the kitchen, there would be a second fridge visible just to the right of that white door. He thinks it is too odd.

DH's view is that if I think the Subzero option is just too wasteful, go with the Cafe version in white matte with bronze, which won't need custom panels. Probably 4k total instead of 7k. I thought they looked too white but maybe if I went with butcher block on top it would marry a bit better. It does not need to match in any sense -- my unfitted kitchen has no matching elements at all, intentionally.

Anyone heard ot Greentoe?! $500 less for the Cafe drawers.

Umm,I thought I was requesting a price with tax and shipping , and I was uhh, in fact, bidding, and I umm ... seem to have bought the Cafe drawers? Tax and shipping are included in the price. (?!)

I will have someone make a wood top, not a butcher block because I would never chop there anyway, and try to match what we have (which is very distressed but whatever).

Think I need some art on that wall.

They seem to be legit, and they have had lots of good press. They came up in a search with a really good price (which I don't quite get seeing as how the concept is you set your price... but whatever). I wanted to know what that price did or did not include, so I put it in a shopping cart and my payment info., too. I hit "submit." I did not think it was binding because it seemed incomplete -- how much was the tax? shipping? But indeed it was binding. The price I bid included taxes and shipping.

Of course, shipping by what method and in what time frame?

    Weird.

Well, maybe too late then, but I was going to say that refrigerator drawers are one plae I think SZ has missed the mark. I bought Perlick when I redid my kitchen and got a dud - twice. SZ didn't make a 24" then, but they do now, so I was looking at them. I didn't love the white plastic interior, but not because it is white or plastic so much as the walls are so thick and the drawers so much smaller than you lose about 25-35% of the space. Our salesperson asked if we had loooked at True (no, and they didn't have it on display). We went to another dealer to check them out and would up ordering the True refrigerator drawers. Not sad you didn't get SZ -- hope you love the Cafe or can cancel if you really didn't intend to purchase.

Be sure to check the installation specs for whatever you use -- you might need a full cabinet (left and right sides as well as a top) or your wall might be able to act as the right side.

Is tax and shipping included, then? How much was your cc charged? Back in the early days of online shopping, I used to worry that I would unintentionally buy something.

@lascatx, the interiors are aluminum. I particularly like the white SZ as they were easy to keep very clean.

I think something like this. The wallpaper is already so busy. Of course with an aqua border

    last modified: 2 months ago

As I said, the white didn't bother me, it was how thick the walls are and how much space you lose in the drawers. The True are stainless steel and also easy to clean. Aluminum is a more reactive metal and will darker or spot with exposure to spills and some cleaning agents, but it's inside a drawer if that does happen.

I should have edited my comment/question. It was poorly worded. I didn’t intend to ask you the cost of your new appliance. I intended to ask if the price charged was greater than the amount quoted. I did it poorly. How much you paid for your accidental fridge is absolutely none of my business.

I'm with your DH on the weirdness of two fridges in those locations. The two drawers must make sense there. They look so much better with the wood top. Not because they match anything else - I get and like that you are not concerned with it. But I like the contrast of the wood much better with the off white drawers. I want to see that WT with the mustard color in your robins egg blue room. I love that color combo.

@lol BBSTX, of course. I did think it was funny. Anyway, the amount was the same as the amount quoted.

Ordering a soft Roman shade today. Questions.

    1. I am inclined to go unlined to allow in light, but I think WT usually look bad unlined. Unless it is a simple linen with no details. WDYT?

    2. The window itself is 38" high. I can tell you it has never once occurred to me that i need a WT there (until I saw the photo) and I will never ever want it down. It has a partial ocean view and is also a great spot to spy on our neighbors (dear friends). I think I should still have it fabricated to 38" so it looks functional. I understand it would need to be a few inches longer given where i hang it. So say 40"? WDYT?

    3. I think I want outside mount, to help soften the wood tones. Which do you think looks best?

L to R: inside, halfway, and max? The edging will be the color of the counter.

I like ”halfway” with ”max” as a close second. ”Inside” doesn’t work for me because it has to be perfect. If it gets even a tiny bit skewed and light comes in around the edges, it drives me nuts.

Real life vs AI so my thoughts are based on incomplete info - the white is too white and no matter how much of the wood is covered in the widest version, it does nothing "to help soften the wood tones." But honestly I'm not sure what you mean by that. If anything, the bright white accentuates the wood. I'm wondering how a woven roman with your chosen trim color would look. I realize that's more structured than the fabric and you want the drapey look, but I'm thinking of it as a bridge color with your wood.

Let me show you some AI fun mid-process. It sure underscores the need to check everything it does. In the beginning it was almost like magic wand, but then it started to do strange things. I think it was tired of me!

    For example.

    Step 1:

It replied with the very same photo. BTW, it also totally made up the contents of the 2 shelves over the MW even though I never mentioned anything about them.

    So then i said:

    What????

    Finally .....

Then finally, it made the mixer bigger but moved it, and randomly and inexplicably popped in a fridge!?

PS I posted on the bargains thread. Today I got a confirm in re my Accidental Purchase, for the correct amount and correct description. I bought thru Greentoe, but the seller is an appliance dealer on LI. It is supposed to ship Nov 6. The confirm also said " Your order is being fulfilled through the GE Home Delivery Network to expedite delivery. Please see the name and phone number below of the delivery agent handling your delivery on behalf of GE & Plessers. You can contact them at any time for questions before your delivery. Once the delivery agent has received your order, they will contact you to schedule a home delivery appointment." Seems copacetic. As I said on the bargain thread the all in cost is ~$750 less than at AjMadison, BestBuy, etc.

In other news, got a call yesterday from our handyman saying we are on his schedule next week to followup on some exterior maintenance. Woo hoo! Told him I have little extra project for him!

Grass sure doesn't grow under your feet, Mtn! I loved reading this thread.

I am also so glad you and Nicole shared about Chatgpt because I've been usiing it and liking it ( mostly)... but I too have Nicole's experience. That's with respect to visuals for decorating. For other writing, I find it very reliable. I also used it for travel planning itineraries etc, and while it was mostly very good, it did absolutely mess up some mileage and timing, so I was glad that I was trusting but verifying.

I was wondering if it would be more trustworthy with a paid subscription.

For the Window Treatment, my first reaction was the inside (LEFT). but after reading so many conflicting opinions, I don't know. They all look nice.

I see no difference in output with a paid subscription. The only difference is that it does not cut you off.

I think of ChatGPT as having a summer intern. You give them tedious tasks, but then have to spend a lot of time overseeing their work.

Professionally, it has not seemed to make my tasks any quicker. I assume my work is better and more thorough with its help, but it is not less time consuming. In that sense it reminds me of word processing systems. In the very beginning of my career, memos were typed manually. If you wanted to fix an error, you had to use white out or retype the whole thing. Because of that, you were loathe to edit. Now, with WP, one edits and edits and re-edits the most minute changes, because you can. Net net, no time was saved.

Agree with not having dueling fridges, even if the Smeg is the most practical.

Like the drawers with either top. Above it, I would consider open shelving as a landing spot for what you take from the drawers, perhaps. I think the mixer looks a bit contrived especially since it matches the kitchen fridge.

I keep looking at the little drawer fridge thinking of ways to "vintage" it up a bit. I think once in place, though, it will be fine.

LOL, I own that mixer. It is neither as large or as small as ChatGPt conjured.

I think something as simple as dishtowels on the handle can vintage it up, styling the counter, and maybe some art there
