Vanity 48 vs 60 inches?

last modified: 6 days ago

I have a post from September on my hall bath and this is just asking a few design follow-ups.

I am removing this damaged double sink vanity (67 inches) and switching to a single sink set up. I'm in a time and budget crunch so I cannot have a new one custom built. We are also removing the wall/door where the red X is. This buys another 5 inches along the long wall. We have a total of 72" of usable space once the wall is removed while still meeting code for the 15" to the toilet rough in (not going to move this).

Getting either a 60 inch or 48 inch freestanding vanity. Assuming the sink will be centered under the current light fixture ( a 36"- 5 light bar) which is a better size for the space?

By my measurements if I go 48 inches, I'll have 15 in to the left once the wall is gone and 9 in to the right wall.

If a 60 inch vanity it leaves only 9 inches to the left and 3 inches to the right.

I don't want the vanity to look too small, but I want space between the toilet and left hand side of the vanity for a TP holder stand and trash can, and enough space to clean between the right hand side of the vanity and the wall.

For either set up you recommend, what is a good size and shape mirror to use?

I would put in the 60 inch. You have plenty of space for it. Since you also have space for two sinks, like you already have, I would still want the 2 sinks.

60”. I’m thinking about the below storage space and above counter space. Only you can determine if 2 sinks are useful and it sounds like they are not.

Will this bathroom be used only by you or will there be a spouse using it as well. If you have a spouse would suggest the larger vanity with a double sink.

Two people can SHARE a single sink

You don't need to brush, spit, shave, simultaneously. (I will never in my life understand all this "togetherness" in a bath, when a man needs about 15 minute of vanity grooming in total. I can be ready for a wedding in 35 min shower to out the door with all makeup on and I am not rushing!)

You made yourself a time crunch........what's that about?! Are you going to do this bath again?

Wall gone, you have 72 inches.... to toilet space needing 30"

I'd buy a straight side vanity at 60" single sink

put it tight to the right side wall. Adjust PLUMBING. Leave 12" at left for tp and whatever.

Hang a big round 42 inch mirror, or buy a ready to go free hanging, framed at 48' x 48....or have one made at a local custom framing shop.

Multiple finishes....you get the idea. There won't enough cleaning issue to even worry about on the right. Put a rag, on a yardstick for the 3" at the floor

Thanks everyone for your replies. A few of you helped me on my original post to get to this point, and I'm grateful.

To recap, plumbing flood back in August, insurance dragging feet and low-balling, contractor busy...busy...busy...my family and I living in a hotel for almost 3 months now and work will go through January.

@JAN MOYER you warned me to "believe it" an insurance claim repair could take this long, as it did for one of your clients. I'm a believer! You say vanity flush to the wall on the right, but then it will be slightly off center from the light fixture. No big deal? Thanks for the yard stick idea, genius!

@Kendrah helped as well to simplify the design and function questions on the original post.

At the end of the day, this bath will be used one at a time by my two teens, and the less sinks and faucets to clean the better for us.

If this ever finishes I will post before and afters. In the mean time I will post again on paint selection once the wall is out and the tile and floors are in. Will be great to get new light in there.

Stay in this one thread!! Don't keep starting new: )

Center!!! Center the mirror on the faucet, which is center sink on the vanity, and center the light over the very same faucet center!

Moving things is a cost of speedy reno, or waste time, trying to get around the obvious.: )

I thought the light might be the one thing I didn't have to futz with but of course not. Thanks again.

Overhang on both sides or get a sidesplash along the right?

I will not start a new post - the old one was too all over the place and long. Clarity moving fwd.

It's from Room and Board, I think they have side splash available, but I'll just do the overhang on both sides. Sounds good.

I would do 48. A 60 inch still doesn’t get you wall to wall. You are 7 inches short. How exactly does a side splash fit in this configuration.

When you can’t do custom, I prefer the vanity to look free standing, like furniture.
