Ideas for fireplace wall

last modified: 5 days ago

Please help improve the fireplace wall. I would like something new for either side of the fireplace - without doing construction. the space on either side of the fireplace is 45 inches.

Are there any pieces I could purchase to make the sides of the fireplace look better? More “filled in”? Maybe taller bookcases? Maybe artwork and no bookcases? I’m open to any and all ideas that would make this room look better. I’m Including a picture of the rest of the room opposite the fireplace.

NOTE: One of the bigger issues I am facing is that the fireplace is built against the wall and anything I buy to put on either side of it protrudes out a lot.

Remove the clunky bookcases at the sides.

Not every fire demands doo dads, built ins, shelves......and FILLER!

Think LESS/ and shallow and a lot more open.

    Add lamps!

Or , three float shelves, a depth to those of not more than eight inches.

When you install a tv over fire? That is your statement. No candles , nothing to add, it's a tv.

You've a dining room one side, kitchen on other side, and what is wall we cant' see? All window? Slider to patio?

Can you post a long view of the side of the room where the fireplace is?
I think you might be able to re-arrange your furniture and or/move the TV so your fireplace better relates to the sitting area but it's hard to tell from your photo.

You're not seeing the elephant in the room: your massive TV. It dominates the fireplace and the room. Please show all four sides of the open space in case there's another wall where the TV can go and the layout reoriented. SHOW THE LEFT SIDE OF THE ROOM.

One solution is to make the fireplace wall an accent wall so the TV disappears.

Just wondering…are you open to moving the two chairs next to fireplace? If possible, you could float the sectional and I think the room would benefit. Built in narrow shelving might be a good choice (no matter the set up) and will help balance the wall and help reduce the tv’s prominence.

Her fire is flat to the wall, there is no depth to the fire box and I would build in exactly nada, which would end as more doo dad junk, filler and no books as nobody buys a hardcover.

The tv is too big, we need a floor plan with dimensions to see if a better arrangement is possible - a different locale for tv which would mean a TOO SMALL TV on either side of that fire.

At the very least......for now? Take all the clunk on sides away: ) for less.: )

Really shallow consoles, more open space. and some light....and better mirrors.

Even just the consoles, tall and lovely lamps, and NOTHING behind them.

Not sure if you need storage, but I could see two tall bookcases on either side of the fireplace with doors. Keep it very simple.

You’ve got a goldmine of potential with your fireplace wall; it’s absolutely the anchoring feature in your space, so using it strategically will make a big impact. A couple of suggestions: one direction is material drama, choose a strong surface (stacked stone, large-format tile, fluted wood paneling) from floor to ceiling so the fireplace instantly becomes the visual draw.

The other direction is minimal sculptural elegance, keep the surround clean and simple, maybe in a warm plaster or subtle concrete tone, then “dress” it with lighting and artwork to give it visual weight without clutter. One practical tip: when you pick finishes, test them under your room’s actual lighting (night and day) to make sure the surround doesn’t end up overpowering the rest of the room.

Thank you for all the suggestions so far! I have added a couple more pictures so you can see the room on a different angle. The room is a bit narrow and not much wall space which is why the TV is above the fireplace. dimensions are 164” x 274”

" And a bit narrow " and is probably an issue compounded by sectional..

Can you draw and measure the whole space? Show all the walls and openings..? Feet and inches?

    ^^ Sorry we crossed!

Show it all in a drawing.. and what it really means? That minus the 30 inches necessary to exit at the slider? your room is essentially 11' wide for a rearrange: )!!

But take the time and trouble and lets see what's possible. All in a sketch...noted dimensions for every wall, window opening etc

Make sure whatever you do accentuates the height of the room.
