Art over bed. Does this work?

last month

Room still a work in progress but doesn’t this artwork work over the bed? I used AI to generate it there.

is that the best location for the bed? It's is all very tight. I think that framed piece would look better on the side wall.

There is 40” on each side of the bed. No other location for the bed

It’s a quiet scene & appropriate for a quiet space. I would look for a rectangular shape to fill in more space between bed posters. Ignore the wall sections - hang the art over them as if the wall is flat. The size of the art you’re showing us looks - to me - as if it were chosen just because it fits into the ’framed’ space. A make do piece instead of art standing on its own merit & hung because you like it. I hope this makes sense & conveys the ’feel’ I get looking at the effect. If you don’t want to hang art over the wall sections then I would instead get 3 pieces - a series of related pieces. I’d size them each to fit into their wall squares. A larger square piece for the middle flanked by 2 smaller rectangular shaped pieces for each side. The result would be an intentional appearance / arrangement.

ETA: the arrangement of art, whether a single, larger rectangle or 1 smaller square flanked by 2 rectangles, would balance the weight of the bed & the art. The single piece of art you’re considering is dwarfed by the ’heft’ of the large 4 poster bed.

I think I agree with Lyn Nielson. Q: is the bed staying as is? or are you adding colored shams/pillows ( even patterned ) there?

  • last month

You don't have to fit your art into the picture frame moulding that's on your wall. I think many people have an issue with this. However, as @KW PNW Z8 has advised, you can just treat the wall as being flat.

I am not a professional so take my opinion for the (less than) two cents it is worth. If you like that landscape picture, would you want to consider a larger one, on canvas and unframed, so that the edges of the picture don't just fit the space but also go just a bit behind each curtain. In other words, create a kind of "window" made out of the landscape that the inner side of each curtain "frames." Am I making sense?

Try this, @Kendrah, may agree, then hang the art.

Or, leave the windows unadorned and use the fabric behind the bed. No need for art.

The fan..must it stay? Think helicopter.

Lighter bedding with an accent color against the drapery headboard. My favorite look for your bed.

Since you have 40" on each side of the bed, consider nightstands with lamps on top and accent pillows with some color.

A bench at the end of the bed might work along with a new ceiling fan.

Then....determine if you need anything behind the bed.

Having had a picture fall off the wall into my bed as a tween, I think beds look just fine without anything lurking over them.

Think shams with a pattern or color would look good on the bed.

The photos of art hung willy nilly over the molding are fantastic examples of what not to do.

  • last month

What is the length of that window wall? Can the bed not go on the right wall with night stands? It does not seem the right spot for the bed.

  • last month

That is the only wall the bed can go on. It’s the widest wall by far

    A S hi there! Yes. 🎨🖌️❤️
It’s a perfect match — up it goes. Lol!

Ps just a twinge thought —- looking at the bed — I want you to consider Tiffany in this room as well. Just a thought! One moment —

  • last month

Stay in a cool blue or violet with a pair of wall sconces on either side, get a narrow sideboard, heap blue glass on either side of Tiffany bookends.
That bed is spectacular, you pick WELL! Just keep going! ❤️

Personally I'd need more colour in the room as a priority but if you like it that way that's cool. Maybe that back wall could be a nice olive green to make a feature? I'm not a fan of wall art over panelling so I get why you bought that piece.

I will be adding a patterned bolster pillow and nightstands. I don’t want curtains behind the entire wall as I just had the molding installed and don’t want to cover it up. It’s just a matter of what shape of art if any. Isn’t it weird to have no wall art at all?

  • last month
    last modified: last month

No, it’s not weird to ”have no wall art at all” but why must it be hung above the bed ? You have other walls. I’m in the no art above the bed camp since I live where earthquakes are a possibility. But, if you aren’t, perhaps something more horzontal. You might want to check out ”Artfully Walls” site , you can filter orientation (e.g., ”landscape” ) & then select a size & frame, sometimes print or canvas, etc .

I think the art’s size, shape and its ornate frame, as well as being boxed in, won’t be complementary. It’s also a lovely piece and I’d place in a location where it would better suit.

If the molding was different, square art would work, but I‘m still not a fan. See how the right size rectangle shape will create more balance and don’t worry about the molding.

Suggest looking for art that has a classic/modern feel to suit your room with proportions that are more suitable.

  • last month

I think it’s a lovely piece. I’m not sure over the bed is the right location for it. Something like a fabric wall tapestry might look nice in that spot and blend in better with the rest of the fabric in the room.

  • last month

Something like this… And something more rectangular that fits the space a little better. I really like the painting I just don’t think it’s the right size for the spot and the frame doesn’t suit the location either.

  • last month

Suggested by Lia above, the tapestry looks very intentional and adds interest and texture to your space. The art you have is very nice and with its size and shape could look nice anywhere instead perhaps a large oval framed landscape. Breaking up the squares and rectangles a bit.

Drpaes all across that wall and thta will make the bed the star . That iece of art IMO needs a different frame if going in this space .Please no tiffany lamps with thta bed ever . How much actual space do you have on either side of the bed ? I am thinking maybe very narrow bent glass tables on either side with nice lamps . To me the bed says modern more that traditional so my head goes there I would love to see the whole room I do however hate the fan/ light please fix that now

  • last month

The bed is a traditional Kincaid rice bed. Do you mean tables like this? I have 40” of space in each side of the bed.

  • last month

40” is a good space for your bedside tables. Not sure about the bent glass tables IMO :). Seems like you would want a bit more traditional look there.

Agree with the suggestion on adding draping all along that wall and then adding your artwork on top of it.

  • last month

Also what do you think about this lumbar pillow?

  • last month

I think the bed is fine as is and needs side tables and other furniture in the room and maybe a bit of colour. It looks like the room is quite spacious and a blank slate for something beautiful

The pics are hard to tell space beside the bed that was why i though bent glass . I still feel the bed leans more modern than traditional and thr plaid not tin my head at all.

  • last month

What kind of pattern for the pillow or color to complement the rug and steel blue quilt?

  • last month

Personally, I wouldn’t want drapery behind the bed, dust catcher, but I’m not a fan of drapes generally …..

  • last month

For me, the idea of dusty fabric behind a bed is a no go. Your molding is handsome and personally, I would allow it to shine alone. The framed art could hopefully go elsewhere in the room? Lovely bed. Calling a useful bedroom fan a 'helicopter' seems uncalled for especially when the PO didn't ask for opinions about it.

  • last month

    AS…. something similar to this?

  • last month

Do you think 2 square pillows or one wider/shorter lumbar pillow?

  • last month

I’m actually in the “don’t put anything behind the bed” camp…maybe sconces which could be a very nice lighting idea. I suggested a rectangular piece of fabric as blending in better, but it is true drapery behind a bed is a dust bunny/spider haven. I wouldn’t put curtains there for sure. With the panelling I don’t think that spot needs anything. Dressing up the bed more is a good alternative or putting some art in other places in the room.

  • last month

Thanks for the extra shots! Yes, there’s a lot of space here to dress the room up. I would do that before focussing on the wall behind the bed.

  • last month

liasch - I didn't want to mention the spiders in fabric, but they are a bigger concern to me than the dust, which is bad enough!

To decide on pillows, suggest bringing home lots to test (that can be returned). Not only are colors/patterns a decision (work with the art) but so are size/shape/placement/balance. There are endless ideas on line if you want inspiration.

  • last month

Indigo… totally agree. On the pillows I also agree testing them is the way to go. It’s almost impossible to judge will it work without trying it in situ. Time yo play!

  • last month

Also I like a throw or a quilt at the bottom of the bed that can add extra colour and pattern. Have you thought about putting a chair in the room or some other furniture?

  • last month

    Thoughts on this pillow?

  • last month

It’s fine. Would look nice if there was a comfy woven chair in same colour somewhere in the space.

  • last month

Pillows are like Art… There’s endless possibilities and opinions. Lol. Do you love it? How do you feel about it? That’s really the acid test. I’m a pillow person so to me it looks a little lonely and could do to have a couple more there but lots of people don’t like the inconvenience of multiple pillows.

  • last month

You could put pillow shams on a couple of bed pillows for example. That’s what I do.
