Modernize brick columns

Not sure quite what to do with these brick columns. So far I have researched lime wash, cladding with wood or with stone. I want them to look more modern. We have recently painted our house a green gray, and our windows will be trimmed in black. These columns are the entry to our front door area, which is already on the dark side. Would love any photos or recommendations you are willing to share.

Now, you are forced to make them work with what you have chosen, paint them black.

Paint them urban bronze. I'm not usually a fan of painting brick. But, in this case, I think the texture of the brick will look good in contrast to your siding. The color will go nicely with the green and black but add a third element.

Can you provide another photo taken from way back? You haven't given us much to work with. If it's a small house, then repaint it a light cream color pulled from the brick and if there's still time for a finish change, choose urban bronze for your windows, not black. It's almost black but has warmth to it. What you haven't taken into account is your entry walkway, also in golden tones, so go with that, add a bright orange door, and you'll forget about having to repaint. (Maybe) Sorry, but you came to Houzz a little too late.

Note the light yellow brick and golden entryway path. That should've been your color palatte, not green.

The brick columns don't bother me as much as the white screen/storm door.

Or you could face them in the wood used for the railing.

I do think a zoomed out photo from further out would be helpful to see the full scope of what you're working with. Initially, with only a limited view, I thought of wrapping them in cedar. Have you considered that? The cedar would play well with the green siding and give an organic modern feel in my opinion. I second the idea of warming up the windows a bit with a deep bronze color rather than true black. That warmth would go well with green and cedar. A new front door or a fun pop of color on there may complete your new look.

A zoomed out photo though will really be crucial here to get the overall look and therefore the best advice. You're siding color looks really pretty, by the way. Best of luck finishing your updates!

Thank you for your input and I will take another pic of exterior for clarification. Weather has been stormy last few days ...PNW Fall :(

Another vote for SW Urbane Bronze, my doors & trim are painted in it, neighbors have copied it ( …the sincerest compliment is … lol )

I think black could work with your window trim and what not. But many don’t like that. We are also PNW and I feel your stormy comment. We love our black trim etc. just as an example.

I was hoping for some contrast with our siding which is already dark. Yours looks great!

I vote black paint with a green undertone (maybe Sherwin Williams Greenblack?) and add a tall ceramic planter or two for some color pop and contrast.

I think contrast is not what you need so the black makes sense since yo have some already then some tall skinny planters filled with seasonal plants in front of them is what I would do. Some nice decor in the entry and no storm door at all it really is not needed. If a screen is what you like get a phantom screen and maybe a color for the door to draw your eye

Here are a few pics for reference. We will replace the front door with something more modern and will also replace the railing.

Hope these pics give better context. I appreciate your suggestions!

Thanks for the expanded photo. (Please anyone who posts a house photo needs to include both closeups and a faraway shot that includes the entire setting even if it seems like the Design Dilemma is one particular thing.) Anyway, now that I see the whole house with the wood railing, I take back the suggestion to repaint. Instead, keep the brick columns or wrap them in cedar sheathing. Since you have a covered porch, remove the scrolly metal door and refinish the door in a light golden wood that echoes the brick and railing. Down the road, hire a professional landscaper to to work on landscaping.

See how doorway and new steps echo brick foundation. You can do the same thing with your golden brick to spiff up the entryway. You already have a golden walkway, so just enhance it.

If you'd rather wrap the brick pillars, here's a house with wood cladded pillars:

Thanks for the updated pics, those are quite helpful! I think wrapping the columns in cedar would look great- and give them a treatment so they don't gray up and lose that warm cedar-hue. You might also consider adding a cedar window box to that window along the sidewalk to tie in the cedar columns.
