Wild White & Yellow Melons?

These wild melons were found growing up along a riverbank.

The yellow ones are about the size of Maypops/eggs with small seeds...and a slight cantaloupe/honeydew taste...but wayy more subdued and just barely sweet, if that.

The white ones are teardrop-shaped, and a little larger, with much larger seeds, resembling pumpkin seeds (but still smaller). Their taste was extremely bitter and lingering, until rinsing my mouth out with water later.

I was fascinated so I did some googling. The yellow one is probably Cucumis melo texana.

I don't buy melons often, but this summer tried the new tart melon. Apparently most people hate it! But I like tart things (sour gummies are my favorite candy) so I saved some seeds from it and plan to have a melon patch next year! After so much work to get a novel trait into the genes, it's hard to believe all the seedlings will lose it in the first generation.

Yes, so the yellow one is Cucumis melo var. texanus (Gulf Coast Melon) & the white one is Cucurbita melopepo var. texana (Texas Squash) - a dynamic duo of native melons!
