Exterior Refresh for 1920 Tudor?

We just bought our first house, a 1920 cottage Tudor. We need to replace the roof imminently, and eventually we would like to change the exterior color scheme. We also want to clean up the landscaping, and maybe change the staircase railing. Would love to get some ideas and inspiration! I love Tudors that have been painted a cream color with beige or grey trim, but I’m really hesitant to paint the brick. Thoughts? Also need advice on roof shingle color. Thanks!

Are the colors in this photo accurate? Is the stucco actually pink? what about the blue ? windows? Perhaps the monitor is skewing the colors. Red door? In any event I would NOT paint the brick, it’s the nicest feature on your house.

I would definitely do something about the red door. Fights with the brick.

I think its the picture, because, on my monitor, I get blue windows and pink stucco too. I am sure that is just bad picture lighting. I would not ever paint the brick. Dont buy a beautiful house and then wreck it by trying to make it look different than what it really is. I agree, that red door needs to go. It sticks out, and not in a good way. Maybe try and take a few more pictures, and see if you can get more accurate colors.

Congrats. Beautiful home. My first home was a very old house. They are money suckers. You need to do things in steps and as you can afford them because with old homes, many things go wrong that you never anticipated.

First step. Agree to never paint that brick. It is the most charming part of your home and ties the old windows, roof lines, and other characteristics together.

Step two. Start to price out different roofs. Do you know yet which roofing materials you can afford?

Step three. Post your different roofing color options here. They need to go with the brick and will also be the driver of your future paint color choices so you need to get them right.

There are thousands of paint color choices. But you will only have a handful of roofing color choices. Focus on the roof first.

Your current trim colors work really well with the brick. I'd leave it the same and after you select a roof color, find a stucco and door color that work with this trim, roof, and brick. This home is going to be gorgeous!

Lovely home! Don’t paint the brick. Kendrah gave you excellent advice.

Yes, the landscaping needs attention. It looks like it was probably very nice at one time but is overgrown and neglected now. Are you an experienced gardener? If not, you might seek advice from a landscape professional about ‘thinning your herd.’

I think overgrown is not exactly the right description. It is mature with badly pruned shrubs. They have been pruned like a hedge. If you thin them taking out crossing branches, opening them up to a more natural shape, they will be an asset and less work to keep them looking nice.

Adjust the white paint on the stucco. It should be more neutral and not peach pink undertones.

I think the garden is pretty nice. It looks well-planned and like it has a variety of plants and shrubs. I'd keep it for at least a year to see what you have. ID and evaluate. Many plants that have a month of glorious bloom look not very special the rest of the time. I might not prune much before you've IDd every thing and figured out if it flowers. If you prune too much, you can cut off any flower buds or pre-buds and a shrub that could be gorgeous will not bloom and look kind of boring.

I'd consider taking another picture. I suspect the stucco is in sun and the brick is in shade, which skews the colors a bit. Lighter trim might be good. And I, too, am not fond of the red door. I'd probably go wood-look for the roof. I would not paint the brick. It's charming. Nor would I change the railing. It's fine. It disappears.

    All-in-all, it's a lovely house.

Thank you all for the fabulous advice! I hadn’t realized how much the red door conflicts with the brick, but that’s a great flag. The colors in the photo are a bit distorted…the stucco is, in reality, a yellowed off-white. I love the inspiration photos shared by @BeverlyFLADeziner! And I appreciated the great gardening advice. I’ll enjoy it for a year before making any major changes. Thanks again!

My house is a Tudor style, and my very British decorator was horrified at the thought of any colours other than the original cream stucco and dark brown wood trim. Looking at some of our neighbours' unfortunate adventures in "updating" their Tudor's colours, she was right. Our roof shingle is dark brown.

A dark green door paint might look very good, or a stained wood if you're going to do a new door.

What about this nice color combo?

I would much prefer the cream and brown, and yes, a brown roof too. The picture above, looks dark and dreary to me.
