How do men travel with jewelry?
My nephew has built up a nice collection of mens jewelry-- david yurman chains and bracelets, some funkier bead pieces but mostly chains, bracelets and a few rings. He has asked for a travel case for his jewelry but all I am finding for men are watch cases (I believe has has one) but nothing for jewelry that is especially for men-- or at the least masculine. I have a few options to run by him but nothing I am feeling great about.
How do the men in your lives travel with jewelry other than watches?
This will be a birthday gift ... prefer to stay under $150 but that isnt a hard limit.

I have never known a man to travel with jewelry other than what he had on. But, I have seen several jewlery travel cases that are navy or black?

Original Authorlast monthThese are the closest I have found but neither has much organization .. and they do have earring holders which he doesnt need.
Leatherology - a brand i know he likes. Not too feminine .. but not much space and zero organization

Also leatherology -- will store more but does it look feminine? Maybe I just need to picture it with mens jewelry?
Tumi .. higher than my target budget, small and not much organization. Still, I like it.
Funkyart
Original Authorlast monthThanks, Mtn .. I did see the Tumi and Leatherology (they are both in my photos above) ... do they look masculine to you? I am not sure how much he would travel with.
I did get him the larger size Leatherology travel organizer above for Christmas .. it has nice organization but def more geared to toiletries .. not jewelry. I do think it is a nice case though so maybe I go with their version of a jewelry case.

Maybe that's because they need less organization than we would? Will he bring multiple rings? Does he wear earrings? Necklaces?
Most men I know wear a ring or rings all the time or not at all, Same with necklaces. I do know men who have a selection of watches, but even then they usually choose one for a given trip, maybe two?
Funkyart thanked mtnrdredux_gw Funkyart
Original Authorlast monthNo earrings.. and I dont think he wears rings often but he does have a nice DY ring.
He has a few chains/pendants and chain/beaded bracelets.
I dont believe he intends to take many-- but he is athletic and so I suspect he wants someplace to keep his nicer pieces when he is playing baseball or lifting or swimming.
I just got this as an add-on to his christmas wishlist .. I can talk to him and show him some options.
I travel with too much jewelry -- I may change out a necklace/bracelet or two for a specific outfit but a lot of my jewelry is "wear every day". I love my Marla Aaron for MZ Wallace jewelry cases but I havent found anything like them for men. They arent fancy but they hold a lot and the sections work very well (I dont carry or wear earrings)

Wait.. speaking of which ... did you have your Marla Aaron appt??

Original Authorlast monthThanks, Sue .. I looked at that one. I think the satin pouches are making me think feminine. I finally gave in and sent him some examples of different styles.
He likes this one because it folds flat and he likes the zipper compartments.

I think Mark & Graham had one in this style too. At least I have some direction -- and really, I could just get this one and be done.- last monthlast modified: last month
I agree, I think this one would be enough. Or maybe a watch one for the bracelets?
Funkyart thanked palimpsest Funkyart
Original Authorlast monthThat was my favorite too, Pal .. especially when I saw that you can purchase extra pouches. It was one of the styles I sent to him but he prefers the one that folds flat.
I will talk to his mom-- see what she thinks.
Thanks for the input!

I recently bought this one. It's not leather, but the organization is good. Sadly, it only comes in one color. Funkyart
Original Authorlast monthlast modified: last monthI like the organization! I have two already so not looking to add another ... and his should be black (all his other travel gear is black leather).
That would be a good gift though!

WARNING - long tangent to answer @ funkyart
It was supposed to be yesterday but I rescheduled. I am helping my DD apartment hunt in Manhattan. Quite a process OMG. Dying to dish about Manhattan real estate.
Before I got interrupted by a real estate emergency, I spent a long time going through MA's inventory online so that I would be "ready" for the appointment. I think I found things for my girls for their early 2026 birthdays.
But for myself, I am on the fence. I am too large to wear anything small and dainty, and too traditional for a lot of her stuff, and I wear pretty much only yellow gold. The things I liked would be over 10k, and frankly what I really liked best is a few of them together, so 30k. I'm not going to do that. I was showing DH and he said --- why don't you just buy the VCA earrings you have wanted for years now? (I have forbidden him to buy them for me because I am so on the fence).
But it was more than a rhetorical question. I have not bought the VCA because I have trouble justifying it. So really, buying something trendy like the MA line is even harder to justify. (the VCA Alhambra earrings I like have been around for 55 years)Most of my jewelry was purchased when I was wearing suits 5 days a week and constantly meeting clients. That I could justify.
Kind of afraid to go to the showroom and get caught up!
Funkyart thanked mtnrdredux_gw Funkyart
Original Authorlast monthI get that. I love the layered necklaces too -- but even if I stay on the low end, it is pricy and I too prefer gold or at least a mix. I think a bracelet is in my future .. but not a necklace (and def not multiple).
In the meantime, I am *loving* my "all weather" silicone bracelets -- talk about high/low.
Thanks for the update, Mtn .. and cant wait to hear about the apt search!

The thing is, they most often show it in multiples, and that is the look that actually attracts me! Like the first image you showed that piqued my interest.
@Funkyart, i kind of liked this for my girls, and the price point is fine for their annual birthday jewelry gift. But it's a far cry from what I would want for me, and really IMHO, incomplete and hence not really the vibe that attracted me in the first place, IYKWIM.

Be careful with Mark and Graham. I was gifted a canvas weekender
a few years ago from my son. Canvas seemed impractical, so I tried to return. They would not return even for store credit. I would never purchase from them again.
As for the jewelry cases, the neck chains would be a big concern. Are his chains thicker than most women’s chains? I avoid traveling with chains due to tangles.Funkyart thanked ratherbesewing Funkyart
Original Authorlast monthThanks for the heads up, rather .. I dont think I have ever purchased from M&G but will be cautious.
I have never had a chain tangle while traveling -- maybe because I wear only one chain that would be considered delicate and I rarely remove it. I dont think I am doing anything special to protect them so it must be the chains themselves. Nephews chains are various weights but not delicate either.
Thanks, Oly .. I did see that. It is not right for DN but I think it seems very nice. Nephew likes the ones that are flatter.
I appreciate all the links and photos ... I have done a pretty exhaustive search myself. We all keep landing on pretty much the same, I think they would all do the job ... but my question is more about what other men are using. It sounds like most arent using anything. I guess that gives me something to think about -- my SO wears no jewelry (though I dont think he's opposed). It was nephew's request so I assume that he would use it. He does have some nicer pieces so I can see why he would want a way to store them.
Thanks again for the input ... I'll be going out to dinner with him this weekend so I'll chat with him a bit more; I have time. His birthday is in early Feb .. I just want to purchase soon since I am traveling and have surgery in Jan.
Funkyart
Original Authorlast monthI get it Mtn .. I like the layered look and am certainly drawn to the pricier pieces. I DO think a necklace can be worn solo and look gorgeous (look at Sue's!) but the ones that would look best imo are out of my budget range. I'd wear Sue's or the one below solo or with one of my other pieces but the gold and diamonds or other gems are what make them stand out and also what takes them to another level for me.

I would not layer up the bracelets they way they show in their photos .. the look is fun for sure but not my style... not my personality. I might wear one other bracelet with it but I am not even sure about that. I do love mixed metals so that helps my budget. I most love the multi-wrap chains but I am not sure they'd look right on my large hands/wrists. I'll try one for sure though.

I also like the heavier chain with a larger lock

Anyhow... sorry, I am not trying to change your mind. Not at all! Jewelry is so personal. It needs to speak to us and reflect us .. at least for me, it needs to. I love that you are considering the VCA Alahambra again. You have talked about them many times over the years. My Marla piece-- when I get it-- is to celebrate a life change. I have a max budget of $2k and I'd like to stay well under. That surely limits my choices. But what I love about the MA locks and chains is that they are so interchangeable -- can support different looks. I dont dress up all that often (and maybe never again) so that helps my budget! Still .. I love the dressier and more distinctive looks. I need to be content with just looking at them LOL. They just dont fit my lifestyle.. or my budget.

@mtnrdredux_gw and @Funkyart - sorry for inserting myself in your conversation - however, I've been looking at MA chains/locks/charms also - and I'm undecided.
My SO has purchased four DY cuffs/bracelets over the past year for me for various occasions (without any hints from me). Typically, I've shown him a few different pieces of jewelry - and then he selects something off of my list. While he did a great job of selecting the DY items (and made a nice "stack" of pieces), I want to steer him towards something else.
I have a jewelry "fetish"- however, since I'm not going to the office every day anymore, I don't wear many of my pieces nearly as much as I used to.
I really want a "daily" necklace - but I don't know what. I would rather have something that doesn't have the clasp end up in the front multiple times a day (that's one of the reasons I started looking at MA since the clasp is supposed to be in the front). However, I don't want to layer several together as a daily necklace - or have him purchase one that's too large (I am small boned - and feel like large pieces wear me vs. me wearing them).
You two appear to be very stylish + have some similar tastes as I do based upon different threads I've read. So, I thought I'd ask you two if you have any ideas.
mtn - I think the bracelet that you posted would be a nice gift for my daughters - I may copy your selection!
I appreciate any suggestions/advice! Funkyart
Original Authorlast monthOh I already took my own thread off topic ... and really, I think the original topic has already gone as far as it can! Even if that weren't the case, I wouldn't have minded! I don't stay on topic IRL either! LOL :)
I have a few suggestions ...
1. If possible ... request the gift be a trip to the showroom in NYC to select a piece together! I plan to buy in person because the photos on the site don't give a good sense of scale ... and because the locks/chains etc are interchangeable, I can see them with chains/cords of different sizes and I can try them with other (future purchase) elements. Plus.. a day or two in NYC!
2. There are a limited number of stores that carry MA. I don't remember where you live but there are a few across the country where you can see limited stock in person: https://marlaaaron.com/pages/where-to-find-us
3. Haunt the MA Facebook and Instagram sites ... she posts prolifically and will often showcase specific pieces.
4. Plan a virtual session with MA staff -- I havent done this but I imagine they would be very helpful.
5. Consult our own @Sueb20 -- she has a beautiful MA necklace and has purchased a few chains for it. She is the one with actual experience. I have just been daydreaming this last year :)
As for a recommendation of a specific piece .. if price isnt a concern, I'd would go with gold and diamonds :). If cost is somewhat a concern, I'd mix gold and silver. I actually LIKE and often prefer mixed metals .. and also mixing elegant with rustic. I think you are on the right path to look for a smaller piece since you are small boned -- but what else are you looking for? What do you like?
- last month
Well, I have just one chain and one lock. I agree to look in person because I have now ordered, and returned, two chains that were too delicate for the charm I have. So I need to hold off and look in person. The chain I have is oxidized silver and I like it with my gold and sapphire lock, but I would also like a gold chain. Of course the gold chains are $$$$.
(I have asked Santa for at least one more lock. I sent him photos of 3 that I liked.)
This is the lock I have in the ”baby” size.
And this is the chain I have.

Check this out — she used two chains to create this look, which I think looks so cool. With enough chains and locks, I could throw away all my other necklaces! (I too have a jewelry fetish.)

I stared at this stuff online for maybe 3 years before I got any (asked DH for our anniversary last year).Funkyart thanked Sueb20 Funkyart
Original Authorlast monthOh darn! i didnt realize you returned the second gold chain!
Earlier tonight i saw a necklace made w/two chains … one side was a heavier link and the other side more normal size links. i thought it looked really cool.
That diamond lock is sooo pretty…

I think for someone petite, baby is nice. But I don't like it as much for me. My fave is probably this little piece of ridiculousness.

Or worse yet, this one --- price upon request
I think this is the one with coral string in this pic? I don't think I want to request!

I found this site, too, which has several variations like the MA chains and locks. I am tempted to try one of their chains. Seems like they’d be interchangeable with the MA pieces.

- last month
Yes, that is what started me down this path. It was the first picture that Funky shared on the other thread.
But also I rarely wear bracelets, and find them kind of annoying. In fact I am first and foremost an earring personFunkyart thanked mtnrdredux_gw Funkyart
Original Authorlast monthlast modified: last monthSue, I love that chain!
Yes, I have coveted the engraved gold lock since I first saw it. But the lock on the pink bracelet is the medium size lock-- not nearly as expensive as the large one Mtn shared. That's the trick with the site-- you just can't tell size or proprotions. I know it is the medium size only because that is where they are showing the pink cord bracelet. In this size, the lock is $7k .. still outside of my budget but also not 30K.
I also like the white gold/yellow gold combo ... but it is still $7k.

The silver engraved doesn't hold a candle to the gold. The gold is stunning ... but the one below was one of the first I fell in love with. The more I look at them... the more i think the silver fits me and my lifestyle. I wouldnt mind a little gold on it but I have another chain with silver and gold that might work well layered with it. I'll have to try it and see.The plan has been to mark a year without smoking with a MA piece... it hasnt been quite a year yet so I have time to consider.

All this chatter about men’s jewelry gave me an idea. I wouldn’t say DH is a jewelry guy, having only worn a wedding ring and a watch for most of his adult life. But when he retired he stopped wearing a watch, and when we went to Santa Fe a few years ago he went a little crazy and bought a leather and silver bracelet. Since then, he has worn it every day, along with a woven friendship bracelet made by DD (she made him one when she was about 10, and now, every time one breaks, she makes him a new one…she is almost 25, how long can this go on?). He added another bracelet from our trip to Kenya last year, but that broke recently. So I have added a David Yurman stainless steel bracelet to his stocking (which was going to be strictly chocolate themed, but whatever). I think he’ll like it!? It will look nice with his black leather one.

@Funkyart - I was supposed to go to NYC a few weeks ago (one of SO's sons lives in NYC with his wife and baby girl) - but my stupid health issues grounded me. I told SO to still go so he could see everyone - especially little baby Maeve. We will be making plans for another trip out there after the holidays.
I was thinking that maybe the baby lock one + have some itty bitty charms for it - but am not sure. I saw the hand engraved lock - I like it because it's unique (= others aren't copying it) + it just looks beautiful - and I'm sure that it looks better IRL.
My "daily" necklace doesn't have to be limited to MA - it's just what I first thought about when I was thinking about the clasp issue.
Here is more information re: a daily necklace. Currently, I don't sleep with any jewelry on - EVER (except for my daily diamond stud earrings - and that still took awhile for me to get used to).
If I'm going to have a "daily" necklace - it would be nice if it was something that I could sleep in - I know myself - and I'd forget to put it on every morning = no longer becomes a "daily" necklace.
Do you all sleep in your jewelry? My SO thinks it's odd that I immediately head upstairs when I get home - and change into something comfy + remove all jewelry items.
@mtnrdredux_gw - it's funny because earrings comprise the smallest number of pieces in my jewelry collection. I've always been more focused on rings (I think it's because I can see them whenever I want - no mirror needed) - HOWEVER, my ring collection has become large enough (unless I find or design a special one). I also can't sleep in rings - makes me feel claustrophobic (I know - I'm odd).
While I have some very nice bracelets, I don't have one that would be a "daily" - I don't think I'd ever get used to sleeping with a bracelet on - but maybe I'm wrong? That's what made me think of necklace/pendant - which then made me think about the clasp issue.
I'll post some photos of some of my pieces in order to show style (although I'd be open to something that's different). I'll be back in a bit!
P.S. Funkyart & mtn - I appreciate your help/advice + that you brought in Sue. @Sueb20 - I like mixing metals like you've done with your baby lock + oxidized chain.
@Funkyart - I jump from topic to topic a lot. My SO will ask, "What made you think of that?" - because I'll make a comment that seems to have nothing to do with what we were discussing (however, I will explain the thoughts that went through my mind that led me from topic A to topic B - it just happens really fast and throws him off 😂). Funkyart
Original Authorlast monthSorry the NYC trip didnt work out .. and so you continue to have health issues. Hopefully you can make a trip work soon!
I am heading out in a few but I have daily pieces that I remove for sleep.. and some I wear almost always. including to sleep. I remove my rings, bracelets and long necklaces before sleep. I have one shorter necklace that I remove only when I am wearing something else that it doesnt work with. I am not sure why I sleep in it-- but it means a lot to me so I guess that is why. It is a gold/white gold charm with a bezel that is about the size/thickness of a nickel. It was customized for me with a lotus on one side and a rose compass on the other side. It isnt delicate so kind of a lot to sleep in ... but it doesnt bother me. You can see the size/length of it in this photo. I am sure many will think i am crazy for sleeping in it lol .. but really, it doesnt bother me. Ive had it for about 20 yr and it is just a part of me.

I recently got an oura ring and I also sleep with it ... on my left thumb.- last month
I can’t sleep with a necklace but I wear two bracelets, and sometimes a third, 24/7. And some earrings, but not dangly ones.

@mtnrdredux_gw - it's funny because earrings comprise the smallest number of pieces in my jewelry collection.
I have a wedding band I wear every day, an engagement ring I wear most days, often with a third sapphire and diamond band.. With those as a given I have no real real estate left for rings. I have some really lovely rings i used to wear when I was single, which I should just give to the DDs.
I like bracelets but they are annoying on the laptop or playing mahjong or cooking or eating (my primary activities, in that order). Plus I have to be brutally honest, and I say this without self pity, but the other day I was thinking about bracelets and i looked at my hands and thought ...meh.
I like necklaces, but they depend so much on the neckline you wear. I have two I started to wear fairly regularly. A small gold coin my DF gave my DM years ago, one of several I have from her but I like this small size. I pair it with a short strand of MM pearls that remind me of my Dad.
I like earrings because they are, to me, most visible.
I take off all jewelry when I get home, too.
Funkyart
Original Authorlast monthYah, I am surprised I can sleep with the necklace ... dont really remember when I started but it is only this one and now the oura ring... though I did lose it in my bed the other day. I may need to switch to wearing it on the other thumb (with a bigger knuckle) when I sleep.
I have ugly, big hands .. and now they are old, ugly and big. I dont care. At least I think I don't care. I'll have to reevaluate in the morning. :)

My daily wear necklace is a diamond solitaire in a martini setting. I sleep in that and my wedding rings:(solitaire and matching dismond bands on either side.) My rings only come off for cleaning. I can’t sleep in bracelets (I often wear a stack of bangles.) earrings, or a right hand ring. .

I had avoided the “talking chains” option for MA because I don’t want words on my necklace but omg they also have gemstones along with letters. The minimum is 3, and I wasn’t liking any I tried (they show a mockup) until I just did 3 of the same. This, I love.

Pardon my obsession. I am down with a nasty cold/cough so my entertainment is limited these days. I just had to cancel 2 nights away with friends so maybe I need a consolation prize. Or just the fantasy of a prize. Funkyart
Original Authorlast monthI havent seen those! I really like the 3 stones!
Is this a contender for the new chain?
- last monthlast modified: last month
I didn't even see those...the MA options are nearly endless! Maybe I should just get Gift Ctf for my DDs, I think they'd enjoy shopping there. But GC are so unsatisying Christmas morning.
My DDs tease me about how often I wear tortoise shell (I have 5 or 6 different pairs of tortoise earrings) and I was like, yeah, it is my long-standing fave. VCA makes a tiger eye version of my fave earrings, but they are too small. Maybe I could have them made, IDK.

Then I am googling tortoise earrings (don't tell my DDs) and finding a number of things to try so we will see.Then... I bought DH an Apple Watch yesterday (for a golf app) and I have been thinking about getting one. It is an easy way to stay in touch without carrying my phone all the time. We need to be able to get texts ~24/7. So maybe an Apple Watch and Machete tortoise band are in my future.

Thank you for watching my Tedtalk. And sorry, @Funkyart for the tangent on your thread! - last month

@mtnrdredux_gw that watch and band is a great combo! i do not like to wear a watch (although I love wearomg bracelets) and could never wear an apple watch. They are just too big! Different strokes and all 😊!
