Kitchen reveal as promised to Mtn

last month

We purchased our house over 2 years ago. It was a fixer with the priority being the decaying siding and leaking roof.

Our kitchen had been updated in 2013. The PO removed the wood floors throughout the house and put in industrial looking brown tile. They also painted the interior red and gold. We had the interior painted within a few months of moving in.

This is a picture of the kitchen I took during our initial viewing. Although the cabinets look to be in good condition, they were not. The corner sink was a PITA during cleanup and not enough cabinet space.

We removed the wall on the left and raised the ceiling. Moved some windows and took out the sliding door(which is behind the dark wood table). Moved the door to the adjacent family room. Installed wood floors throughout the house.

Cabinets are white quarter sawn oak and the counters and backsplash are leathered Taj Mahal quartzite.

Sink is where slider used to be. Two new windows on either side of rangetop.

Living room and dining room in the distance. We also tore out the old bar area and matched the cabinets and added a wine fridge.

Took this picture last night at dusk. Family room is on the right.

Really happy with the way everything turned out. We started demo beginning of July and moved back into the house Oct. 1.

We also fixed the entrance to our main suite, taking out a step up, step down into the room. This involved moving the toilet which on a slab is very messy. But it made our house a true one story with no steps which was important to us moving forward.

Each bathroom had the same vanity cabinetry and granite as the kitchen, so we redid each one. We removed the bathtub from the guest bath and installed a walk in shower. So our 3 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath house has no tub. In our RE market, for a single level home with an ocean view, this is not a problem.

We are so happy to be done with all major construction!

I sure like the way the white quarter sawn oak and the Taj mahal counters compliment one another to create something so soothing and calm. The room looks like it would be such a joy to be in and to work in.

Just came back to say that raising the ceiling has made all the difference. What was above it before? I have a small house but it has 9-ft. and some vaulted ceilings and that overhead space really helps open things up.

We started demo beginning of July and moved back into the house Oct. 1.

You completed a total kitchen renovation (including raising the ceiling + moving a slider + removing/relocating other windows) + two full bathrooms (assume half bath also - but it wasn't mentioned in your post) + fixed the entrance to you primary suite (including moving a toilet in an "on slab" house) + removed tile floor and installed new wood floors throughout the home - all in under THREE MONTHS???!!!!??!

Plus, it looks STUNNING! It's difficult to believe that the finished kitchen started out as the kitchen in your first photo. It looks like a completely different space!

Question - how wide are your stiles/rails on your doors? I need to decide what size I want for my kitchen very soon. I've been thinking slim/micro shakers for an "updated" look - but after looking at your photos, I'm wondering if installing shaker doors with the same size stiles and rails as yours would be better for longevity?

If you want to share "before/after" photos of your bathrooms also, I'd love to see them!

That is back-slapping gorgeous! What a great job. Your remodeling choices were perfect and the kitchen makes so much more sense functionally too. Great job!

It is almost spa-like! Like I expect you to serve nothing but chilled cucumber water and dried fruits that look like potpourri.

Thank you all for the wonderful comments. I am really happy with how it came together. You know how stressful it is when you are making so many design decisions and keeping your fingers crossed it will all work out!

We had a great contractor. He was recommended by our realtor when we bought the house. He has a large crew and they work hard from 8am to 5pm. My DH and I have lots of experience with home construction and renos. This was not our first rodeo! We rented a condo just minutes from our house so we could stop in multiple times a day to answer questions or work through issues. And there were plenty of those! We planned ahead and stayed on top of deliveries insuring that when they needed something, it was on site. My DH made many trips to stores picking up supplies for workers so they could keep on working. Our contractor was very appreciative of that and did lots of extra work at no additional cost to us.

@dani_m08 The stiles are 1.25" and have a shallow reveal. I was all about easy to clean so this appealed to me. Here is a closeup:

Having a contractor who does good work + shows up every day + works 8-5 makes all the difference. Receiving a referral from your realtor is a great idea. I've had some contractor issues - it makes me nervous to start my kitchen reno (and I did a lot of due diligence + had referrals from two of my law partners). My niece is a realtor - I think I'll ask her for some recommendations.

I thought that the stiles/rails were about 1" - I think 1 1/4" looks great (much better than wider ones).

Thanks for letting me know! Enjoy your beautiful kitchen!!

One of the best kitchen renovations I have seen in a long time. These are wildly popular materials yet your kitchen doesn't look trendy. It looks comfortable and somehow original and unique to you. Kudos on making your home stair free too!

Fantastic job. I love everything about it. All your choices are perfection.

I also cannot believe that was done in 3 months. Just my primary bath took 3 months and there were no unexpected problems and all materials were on site before they started.
