What else is in your space? How many people do you want to seat regularly and what are they doing in the room? You could also do more than one sofa and still have chairs.

It’s just my husband and I. We’ve got a don’t entertain much . The brown couch is what we had upstairs, now downstairs in area

If you already own this sectional I wouldn’t get another bigger one unless it is in bad shape. I would lover the tv quite a bit and put it on a different unit that is longer and lower. I would have the sectional face the tv and the lounge chair where sectional is. Also would add a coffee table

I know there are options for making a t v look like art hanging on a wall or over a fireplace. What if you put the t v on the stair wall? I could only find one image.

    https://caitlinmariedesign.com/frame-tv-review/

Now, what ever sectional you purchase is facing the t v.

With this arrangement the sectional can pulled forward to clear the windows; no need for the media console; room for a coffee table. Put the sectional on the rug.

Why sextional with everyone lined up in a row with no armrests except for 2. Get some chairs ans sifas so everyone has at least one arm rest. It also gives you the ability to chnge the layout from time to time . Please lower that TV s o it just sits barely above the cabinet . You have afabulous view and no one gets to see it .

Patricia, OP said it is two people and not a lot of entertaining. So who else needs aj arm rest?

Can you move the sofa so that your back isn’t to the windows? I’d want to be able to enjoy the view instead of staring at that corner. I’d really like the furniture turned another 90° so the front of the sofa is facing the big wall of windows, but I can’t get AI to create that image for me. :-/ I’d also move the television a bit more to the left if you can (closer to the window).

Sometimes........we have more space than we need?, and Hubby has his "spot"? and His chair?

I would buy no sectional, and definitely no chaise sectional. Why? I sense we're in a long time home, the kids are gone? They moved to distances far?

Sectionals HATE to move. Most times, they will become the regret in ANY move.

"We're not moving" But what if you do?: )

"We don't entertain much" I understand, but maybe you don't love the room enough, and could that be a partial reason?

You are just two, but I'd do one couch, get a couple nice swivel chairs, that need not be over priced. Add an accent chair, and MAYBE you prefer a chair for tv? Or you stretch out on the couch? Who knows? Only you.

You can find 15' wide broadloom carpet, that can be made to an area rug, any length! Will absorb noise, warm the space, and add texture!

Apologies, but it just feels a bit under furnished, and no matter you love plants? They can't make up for a case where you need a bit....more. Even for just the two of you: ) and call some friends ?

Perhaps you'd like a recliner as Hubby? That's a good idea too! the point here? You don't need a sectional. At all. Think about how you both like to sit/relax and I will tell you right now, you haven't enough low glow lamp light, and for all any of us know? Hubby recliner is where it is, because it's the only spot near electrical, and he reads in that chair as well as watching tv? This is an EASY add in the floor from the lower level

If you aren’t totally in love with a sectional, don’t buy one. Regular 3 seat couches often have a chaise option in many of their styles. I would change out my sectional if I could justify the cost (ours isn’t that old). We have a long and wide great room and it felt like a sectional was needed to help fill up the space. I still don’t love it and would prefer a sofa and chairs.

  • last month

It sounds like the main purpose of the room is a place for you and hubby to watch TV.

The way it is currently set up the person on the chaise is looking at the recliner- not the TV.

I may get a 3 seat sofa with built in recliners that faces the wall with the TV.

I would move the TV closer to the window and position the tv to the appropriate height for how you will watch TV. If you typically recline the TV needs to be higher than for upright viewing.

Make sure you have 3' walking distance between walls and furniture or pieces of furniture to allow optimal traffic flow.

LOL......I need to start a list of things I detest most? Chaise sectionals, or reclining sofas, that force a vacuum of space in front of them or you can't recline. "But they're so comfy!"

    So is your bed: )

Jennifer… thanks for putting that together. The elephant in the room that I have to deal with is my husbands recliner.

Why is his recliner the "Elephant?

Is it leather, fabric, what? You hate recliners.....or you hate THAT recliner?

  • last month

Bev nothing wrong with the recliner but as it is set up now only the recliner gets a good tv spot. You have to find a way for the sofa or sectional to also face the tv.

Nice moc up Jan. It’s my husbands recliner. It will be a while before I can talk him into letting go of it but if I do. I wonder if a lighter color is way to go

Today, My husband and I kicking around the ideas of just a 3 piece sectional and adding chairs… or 2sectionsls with chase. I vote 3 piece couch

What is the problem? Is It lighting?

Just proves WHY it need not be a sectional. At alll? No reason you can't flip?

    You have room for a 90" sofa, a 96" sofa...a 102"!!

Get a nice big upholstered top cocktail table and put your FEET UP!

There are plenty of great looking recliners! I'd not take that away from him, and if your are looking for a very updated space, you have a lot more to consider, beyond JUST a sectional...:: )

Go online, find some inspo pics of rooms you love..and I would not paint myself into a corner with the LEAST versatile upholstery on earth- the sectional.

I am finding that as I age and the people in my life age, that more and more people want a recliner. My BIL who has advanced Parkinson's spends most of his life in his recliner - including sleeping in the recliner.

They are not beautiful, but sometimes it is the most comfortable and easier to get in and out of than a sofa. Sometimes a reclining sofa is an acceptable middle ground.

My sister and her husband (the BIL with Parkinson's) had a reclining sofa and both enjoyed sitting in it for several years, but as they aged they ended up buying two individual recliners because they worked better for them.

Two of my other siblings and their spouses have also transitioned to recliners as their main personal seating and another has a recliner, but his wife still likes to sit upright on the sofa.

I have a sectional sofa with 3 recliners, 2 non recliners and a corner piece. I live alone, but this provides enough seating for me, guests and my 2 dogs. I had to search for a reclining sofa that was also comfortable to lay down on since I sometimes like to lay on the sofa to watch TV.

If hubby needs his recliner and is unhappy with a reclining sofa you could replace one of the barrel chairs in my design with his recliner or you could do two recliners facing the TV and keep the sofa where the barrel chairs are.

The most important consideration is how functional the space is for the people who are living in the space.

Moved chase out…. Put cover on chair for visual. To see what a 3 piece:….8’ couch. Would look like

  • last month

Please move the sofa/sectional whatever you end up with. It needs to face tv and asp get window view. The reason or doesn’t look great now is the set up not the pieces. The big piece like the sofa should face the tv.

Can you help me understand your resitance to FACING the couch to the fire?!

you have a generous space !!!

He can still have a recliner!

    You get a couch 90 - 102”!

  • last month

Put athletic socks under the feet of the couch and keep moving it around to see other arrangements. That’s the on,y way to appreciate the ideas you’ve been given.

Despite its bad reputation, a recliner can be a nice looking chair. My husband’s is a tight backed wingback chair that looks elegant when we have people over, and is comfortable for him since he gets good back support. It’s been reupholstered 3 times and still is in great shape.

They are out there. Mine can’t be the only one.

It would be good to have equal levels of relaxation when watching tv. Your husband has picked one method. A recliner supports your upper and lower frame pretty much laying out.

You can get really as comfortable laying on a couch with a carefully chosen seat cushion. A deep one from a manufacturer who offers depth choices. You can think about the seat cushion construction in the same way as a bed mattress. Mine has pocketed springs and a Dunlop latex topper. An extra-large ottoman is used instead of a coffee table for snacks and laptop. An ottoman is moveable so more casual and relaxed than a static coffee table.

You're going to be more comfortable than you'd be in a recliner.

    Got furniture moved.

  • last month

When the sofa is facing the tv pull it onto the rug a bit and change the orientation of the rug. Pull the recliner closer too. Everything looks disconnected, would also be good to add a coffee table.

  • last month

That’s better, but can you try turning the sofa another 90° so that you can both enjoy the TV and the view? That way, your hubby’s chair will be facing the TV, and he can also take in the scenery. To make this work, you might need to move the TV closer to the windows and away from the stairs. But I think your current sofa should do the trick, and the number of sections you use will depend on how it fits in this spot. You could even keep the chaise section on the TV end of the sofa. Two swivel chairs opposite the sofa could also be a lovely addition. With this setup, you can recline on the sofa and have a perfect view of the TV (you’re the pink stick figure in the drawing. Lol). And a big thanks to Jan for her wonderful drawings—I borrowed one and rotated the furniture (much easier than creating something new). Thank you, Jan!

Yes, do please rotate the rug! You need not be jammed against the stair rail

The single biggest problem is the room is under furnished, despite there are just two of you! You can't "shrink" 23' x 23'......: ) Leaving it nearly empty will make it appear LONELY and BIT CHILLY?

Thank you all. Lots to consider . The mock ups really helped! The stick figure cracked me up. Lol. Sorry the videos didn’t play. It would have shown better the room but instead they act like still photos

    @Bev

Look at your picture here please? We all know the room is 23 x 23......how many feet and inches RIGHT of that window on the tv wall.?

The tv is mounted too high by at least 18 "! : )

I think you've centered it on that wall.......and it is DRIVING your decorative attempt at a good arrangement for the space ,along with great viewing of the tv.

Tell me/us the feet and inches , please?

    We'll tell you in exact inches where to put........everything? : ) : )

That is a 3 seat couch....

A room must be more than a couch, and more than an arboretum. : )

    Now what?

I am also confused as it looks like nothing changed in the room and zero advice was taken on layout too.

I didn’t get picture of husbands chair as he’s sitting in it.

They delivered the end piece missing yesterday. We enjoy our view so much that I we decided to go with 3 pieces and add a larger rug(haven’t got it yet). I’m wondering if end stands in a certain color will make the couch appear longer
    ?
One of the problems is that husband likes his chair to see outside and I get to move the couch where it was every now and again. Even the pillows have to be not obstructing his view outside . So once again I’m thinking something at either end of sofa to give the couch a more elongated look if possible and a BIG rug

So the layout hasn’t changed at all and your husband has entirely dictated how the room looks because he wants to be able to look outside and at the tv? I see no changes at all despite there being tons of useful advice about how to make this large space look significantly better and function properly as a living/family room vs husband reclining room. Would love to see this space when. It is fully put together and as you like it, assuming there are changes being made to it.

I’m so sorry you feel that way. If you think myself or future viewers don’t get any good ideas from your wonderful ideas, you’d be mistaken. I love looking at ppls posts and seeing ideas kicked around. And seriously tried other options and went back to the furniture store. Talked to their decorator as well. They suggested a larger rug and switching out husbands brown recliner for a lighter one and having the couch in previous. Post. We are still making changes albeit at our age it’s slower.. Since it’s a sectional we can add pieces in the future Thank you once again for your wonderful advice as we make changes

Perhaps I am confused. Your paired image is of a three seat sofa and not a sectional. It is in the same spot that it started in. Can you clarify what changes were made?

Maybe you are using the word sectional and it should be modular because it is not all one piece? What you are showing is not a sectional.

I will just say this? If the "third" and missing piece to this sectional is a chaise? I would ditch it now.

And I am . not clear as to what or how "adding pieces to the sectional means", either.

You have to forgive me, and West Coast above, because it DOES seem from your posts and pictures, that you are still a bit stalled at the beginning?
